Which mail order companies give the best deals on ammo (incl shipping)? I'm looking for inexpensive 44-40 (for plinking) and none of the local stores have any in stock....so either they order it or I can.

Suggestions?

"...inexpensive 44-40..." No such thing. Epp's lists it, but the shipping costs will kill you. It'd be better to have your local shop order it if they can get it.
It's supposedly a pain to reload too and it uses a rather odd diameter bullet. .427". A .429 might work though. Slug your bore and use cast bullets that are as close to your groove diameter as possible.

Cast bullets sized to .429 work in the 44/40 and it is no more diff. to reload than other cases(can't use/get carbide dies), this cartridge screams out to be reloaded as I have seen factory ammo priced at $40/50. Here is a reloading breakdown of costs: bullets....8 cents ea....powder...4 cents ea....primer..3 cents ea. total cost for a box of 50=$7.50........do the math! Period correct bullets avail. as well as Gas Check, cowboy action, from MT Chamber's Supply.
