I have a ton of brass to swage and find the Dillon Super Swage 600 a bit tedious to use, mainly the flicking to the case holder. After drawing up plans for ideas that I figured would take a bit too long to make, I came up with a very simple idea anyone can do. All you need is a length of string, an elastic and a large washer of some kind.:D

First make a loop of the string that goes from the nut on the end of the case holder to the handle. I tied my string off at the handle end. At the handle end you will need a washer of some kind for the string to sit on. I used a rubber washer from a garden hose.

You'll need to find the correct length by trial & error, to fine tune the length simply twist the string under the swager like so. Also, the set screw in the upper left corner of the swager in this picture, back it off so the case holder moves freely.

Next you'll need to secure an elastic in a manner like below.

This is where you will need to fine tune the relation of the string and elastic so the swager operates properly. If the string is too tight it can cause the case holder to come down to late and the swaging head will ram into the case head. If the elastic is too strong it won't allow the case holder to come up very high. Adjust the number of twists in both the string and elastic until you find a nice balance.

Next re-mount your Super Swage, but this time you will need to keep it off of your bench slightly as not to inpede the movement of the string. I used three large nuts.

Now test it out.

As you operate the handle the case holder is pulled down into position by the elastic before the swaging head makes contact with it.

Once swaged the case holder will pop back up into the original position pulled by the string, all you need to do is replace the swaged case with a crimped case and repeat! :dancingbanana:

Glad you guys think it's cool. I updated my post with one additional component and added a video of it in action.

Pretty slick!

You should definitely sent that to Dillon and see what they come back with!

They won't come back to you with anything next you'll see it in the market place :D

Thats pretty cool... modifying your equiptment to make it better using basic household items is pretty cool

I posted it on Dillon's forum, I'll let you know what they think.

I was just thinking up a more professional version that could down like so:

The spring for the case holder could be a torsion spring installed on the axle, and the string could be a thin metal cable.

The cable could be secured at the case holder end on a modified holder that has a threaded extention where a cable loop could hook and the thumb screw secures it on. The end of the holder would have screw driver slot to be adjustable like the original.

At the handle end a special bolt could be secured in that has a hole for the end of the cable to pass through and a small threaded hole for a set screw to secure the cable at a given tention.

If anyone does this to their machine I would like to hear feedback on how well it works for you.

I would also love to come up with an auto feeder. Right now I take fresh case between my finger and thumb, push it next to the swaged case, pull off the swaged case and move the fresh case into position to slide it on at the same time as letting go of the swaged case and having it drop into a box. I even added a little ramp to guide the cases into the box. As that case is swaged I grab a fresh case from a box and repeat. I can actually go quite fast when I get into it.

FYI if you get a Super1050 you can swage on the the go with that... thats about as fast as you'll be able to go without an automated machine plus you can automate the 1050 too... :)

But keep at it and see what you come up with

Brilliant!

I'm late to the thread and have little to add, but since I've recently done a few thousand .223s (oh what a bore!!!), and have several times that many to eventually do, I really must thank you. I will *DEFINITELY* try out your method!!

I wanted to tell you to send it to Dillon (but that's already been done)

I wanted to pay you a "McGyver" compliment (but that's already been done).

What is the purpose of the white material (tape? paper?) wrapped around the rod that holds the case, that is just beyond where the case mouth ends up?

Thanks. :D

The white material is masking tape, it has some marks on it for adjustment settings depending on headstamp.
