Making a 10/22 shoot subsonics reliably

Hello everyone I’m trying to make my Ruger 10/22 function reliably with CCI quiet ammunition. My rifle seams to like this ammo the best accuracy wise. At 710fps it seems to be the quieter of all the subsonic .22 Lr’s I tried but unfortunately it doesn’t cycle the action reliably. I replaced the action spring with a lighter one but no change. Any other mods I can do to make it work?

Did you polish the inside of your receiver or the places bolt makes contact with the receiver?
People also radius the back of bolts at the bottom to help function.
I wonder if anyone ever drilled or slotted a bolt to lighten it? ( Just thinking out loud here. )

I'm no expert, but good luck.

I love cgn first but sometimes the american forum rimfire central comes in handy as well.
I won't put their address here, It does not seem right, but google will help you.

Supposedly the KIDD light spring will work. Volquartsen makes a bolt called the Fire Fly.

The Firefly Bolt is designed to shoot the CCI Quiet 22 LR cartridge.
The Firefly Bolt is a complete CNC-machined bolt that features the same improved Firing Pin and Extractor as our complete rifles.
This round design of our firing pin eliminates the unnecessary vertical movement found on most 10/22 firing pins.

Thanks guys, I put the Kidd light spring on it but I think the hammer spring is where most of the resistance is. I got spares so I will try to lighten one of them and see if it helps. Subsonics are great the loudest part of the gun is bolt and firing pin being struck.

I like shooting them also. I have a bolt gun that I'm sighting in specifically for the Quiet 22 ammo.

Bonus. If you have a scale (and wouldn't mind) try weighing the bolt some day when you have it apart. It would be interesting to see what it is. I think VQ lists their regular bolt at somewhere around 7 ounces and the Fire Fly at 3 ounces something.

Try radiusing the back of the bolt where it contacts the hammer. This will make the bolt push higher on the hammer, giving it more mechanical advantage against the hammer spring. I used a low speed wet grinder like you'd use for sharpening lawnmower blades and such, then Emery cloth to polish up the grinder marks.

my 10/22's only cycle when its rated above 1000 fps. I tried the quiets and they didnt extract at all.
Too bad we can't use supressors here.

Years ago Remington made subsonic .22lr ammo and it cycled my 10/22 just fine but I cannot find that particular ammo any where. It was loaded a little hot for a subsonic round 1050fps if I remember correctly supersonic threshold is just over 1100fps with out getting to much into atmospheric details.

The CCI Quiets are great. I just shoot them exclusively in my Little Badger single shot for Grouse when I carry it out deer hunting.
I don't think I will bother trying them in my semi due to the cycling issues.

I miss the old dynapoints. Worked really well and I believe were subsonic. I was in at the new bass pro and found it interesting cci standards rated at 1070 FPS were $8/100 yet the subsonics rated at 1050fps we’re $12\100. Was scratching my head at that one.

Question to those who shoot subs. Is there a noticeable difference between the 710 FPS and 1000-1100 FPS?

Is the muzzle blast sound that noticeably different?

Try this, it is a simple modification and smoothes the operation of the 10/22 with all ammo. There are tons of online tutorials for this mod. You may have to try combine this mod with your lighter spring for the low evergy round you are using. After that you will have to try lightning the bolt - but then it will be a rifle dedicated to that 710fps load at that point.

I hear a noticeable difference and then there’s the fun difference. If your eyes are good enough you can see the round arcing down range
