Making a 10/22 shoot subsonics reliably

I've got mine tuned to run anything. Radiused/polished bolt, polished hammer face and the underside of hammer, deburred the hammer spring strut, lighter hammer and recoil springs. Try hv ammo as you tune, if you go to light you'll start getting a lot of debris blowing out of the ejection port and even splitting cases. I found a nice happy medium where 1050ish subs cycle but it still runs hv good too.

Hello everyone I’m trying to make my Ruger 10/22 function reliably with CCI quiet ammunition. My rifle seams to like this ammo the best accuracy wise. At 710fps it seems to be the quieter of all the subsonic .22 Lr’s I tried but unfortunately it doesn’t cycle the action reliably. I replaced the action spring with a lighter one but no change. Any other mods I can do to make it work?

I polished the innards to a mirror finish, and radiused the bolt. Now it will cycle the CCI 40gr quiets (710fps) about 7 times out of 10. I would think that if I also went to a light weight spring like you have, that I could get that up to 10/10.

The bolt radius tweak makes the greatest difference in my opinion.

This thread reminded me that my 10/22 is finicky with the CCI quiets too, and inspired me to break out the Fitz and do a little work. I polished everywhere I could reach inside the receiver, and the outside of the bolt (Dlask CNC). There's still a tiny bit of catching that I can feel between the bolt and something in the receiver right before it hits the very end of the stroke to the back. I think the end of the guide rod spring is rubbing on something, so I polished that as well and greased the contact surface. It's not perfect, but it's really slick now in comparison to how it was an hour ago. I'm going to try to sight it in with some subs and use it as a rabbit gun.

The only auto loader I have that will reliability cycle CCi quiets is a Browning SA-22

I tried a mag of CCI quiet in mine and all ten rounds fired without a problem. I bought some quiets for my M6 Scout and decided to try them with the SR22. I should add my SR22 is well used.

I do have probably 6000 rounds through that SR22.

Volquartzen 10/22 firefly bolt allows you to cycle cci quiets reliably, but its too ligh to fire hv then. I have one.

With a lighter dlask spring on regular bolt, I can cycle any subsonic except the cci quiet.

Deburr the bolt and receiver... and do a fine polish with Flitz and "0000" steel wool... use the lightest Rimfire Technologies spring and take a few grams off your bolt with two judicious holes... I had two guns functioning with 100% reliability for backyard plinking with the kids a few years ago.

Odd. Because I couldn't get my Browning buckmark, to eject let alone cycle CCI quiets. Or my Marlin 70 HC. Now they function fine with subsonics 1050 FPS. But not the 710 FPS.

I am going to work on this Browning Buck Mark Sporter to get it functioning with Quiets, for grouse while moose hunting... it is close now, just a smidge slow on the follow up chambering.

Yeah my Browning buckmark is a 1990 Model. The extractor would skip every time with CCI Quiets. That I would have to pick them out. Wouldn't do that with any other ammo I tried that day.

My Marlin I might see about polishing it and deburring it. Also putting in a lighter trigger. The Buckmark.. It's gold so that aint happening.

I did a quick polish with Flitz on the inside of the receiver and bolt last week. It slicked everything up, but it still isn't enough to get mine to cycle CCI quiets. The corner of the bolt just contacts the end of the recoil spring where it bulbs out to fit that spot in the receiver. I polished the bolt at that contact point as well, but it still gets hung up there.

My next step is the Dlask charging handle set with the kidd guide rod and a lighter spring.

I could not get there with the Kidd... the Rimfire Tech rod, light spring and aluminum handle got it done... with a good amount of polishing... you can also clip coils on the light Kidd spring, but go slow and keep checking.

I think I've got it! Dlask/Kidd charging handle and spring set are in, and I took a dremel and radiused the bolt where it was contacting the guide rod spring retainer. Now when I cycle the bolt, there is no contact whatsoever, and in addition to the light spring set, I think I might have a winner! If not, I will admit defeat and buy the Volquartsen Firefly bolt

my 2 cents... I have a very old browning SA-22 that cycles cci quiets as fast as I can squeeze the trigger. Hundreds of rounds and zero issues. It is a surprisingly accurate .22 also. They are not exactly cheap though.

That’s pretty cool. I own a Winchester 290 semi tube fed that will cycle CCI Quiets and 22 shorts flawlessly and is quite fun on running bunnies. Good for those urban hunting grounds where I need to be silent
