Making a pyrodex load without data to start from

I have an antique Colt SAA in .41LC I'm reloading for, and I want to go to pyrodex to get away from the corrosive effects of black powder on the old girl and easier cleanup.

Problem is, I've never seen any data for such a purpose. It will take 19grs of FFF black powder under a 165gr HB bullet for a standard load, though I'd prefer shooting loads on the order of 15-16grs of FFF to take it easy on her... What would be the pyrodex equivalent? (First time using pyrodex)

Thanks!

No .41 Colt experience, but as I understand it, you would use an equal volume of Pyrodex. This has worked for me with shotgun loads. But I have heard that pyrodex is at least as corrosive as black powder, and thorough cleaning is necessary.

Thanks for the info, I still have a lb of FFF to use, so I guess I'll go BP then anyhow...

I have been useing Pyrodex in 45 long colt cases and i dont weigh it i made a scoop out a shortened 45 long colt case.
i fill the case up so the pyrodex slightly compresses when the bullet is seated.
You dont want any air space.
The Wizard has been shooting pyrodex in his Antique 41 long colt PM him he will give you info on his loads im sure.
To me the more i can get into the case the better :D I Like it
And its easyier to clean up than BP

I just noticed this thread, and I never got a PM. Anyhow, I use Pyrodex "P" powder in my .41LC and it works great. It is far more accurate than Unique and other smokeless loads. I don't weight it either. I made a measure scoop out of a .41 Colt short case, with a handle I soldered onto it, made out of a piece of 10 guage copper wire. This works perfectly, and pits just enough powder in the .41LC to allow slight powder compression when seating the bullet. I can measure the length of the .41 short Colt if you don't have one, then you could cut down a .41LC case and make a measure out of it. As dingus said, you don't want any air space in there, you load exactly the same as you would for black powder when using Pyrodex "P".:)

Ardent, PM me an e-mail address, and I'll send you a really good write up called "all you ever wanted to know about the .41 Long Colt". Lots of really good info in there as far as loads, cases, bullet types, and pretty much anything else. Also, I recommend using hollow base bullets, it puts the lube inside the case, and case length is less important as compared to using healed base bullets (there were three different lengths of .41 Long Colt produced).
