Does anyone have experience loading .45acp with small primers? I have always used large, but i recently aquired a bunch of small primer brass. Should this have any effect on velocity? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Small primers work just fine in 45acp. I am using those exclusively because it is easier to not change reloading setup back and forth when reloading multiple calibers.
But if you're concerned, you can also use small magnum or small rifle primers.

If you're loading to make PF plus a minimal amount for insurance then I would think it would be worth chronoing some of your small primer loads. Or you need someone that is in the same boat that has chronoed the regular large and small primer loads that can tell you if there is a difference. But either way in the end it's still you at the end of the gun shooting over the match chrono with your ammo. And it's you that will carry on for the day for major or find yourself reduced to minor or going home. If it were me I'd be testing it to make sure of the loadings.

A good friend of mine used to shoot 45 in standard. I remember his loads with small primers were slower than his load with a large primer.

I don't remember exactly what the figures were but they were in the neighborhood of 15-25 fps slower

i reload both, but i made it a habit to reload my 45 small primer brass with a magnum small pistol primer to make up for its size, didint notice any difference, the only thing i find to be a pain is that i have to seperate the large and small primer brass before priming

thanks for the information guys. i have heard all kinds of conflicting information regarding what effect different primers (large small magnum) will have on a round loaded to the same specs. got some more LP brass. problem solved.

experiment

I have loaded some 45 ammo with small pistol, small pistol magnum and large primers. I just got to find the time to get to the range with my chrony to see if it will make a difference.

I did an experiment last year with different primers from different manufactures. It really makes a difference. The federal primers gave me about 50 FPS more than the other brands. I wrote a paper on it.

Cheers
