Hi all

Since you seem to like projects, here is one I'm making. I found some plans of a Lee Enfield transit box, and I decided to make my own. I have some maple boards in the wood rack, so I planned them to about 5/8 thickness.

I'm having difficulties with photobucket, so I'll come back later with more pics. Anyway, here is one of the dovetailing, with a 303 case so you have an idea of the size...

Anybody who wants a set of hardware can PM me. I did the right thing a few years ago and salvaged the metal parts from a half-pallet of really rotten and ugly ones. PM me for availability.

As for the real thing, the dovetails were straight mortise and tenon.

maple leah eh...is you hardware from CNo7 transit chests or No4T British? There are a few differences for the purist at heart.

Canadian CNo7 chests

Cana'jan, eh? And yes there are differences, but those factories have been closed for 66-65 years. Beggars can't be choosers.

This is the drawing I'm using. I'm not pretending to do an exact replica, just a solid box based on the original. I had to addapt size to the wood I have.

Small progress, need to trim the dovetail and then I'll move to the bottom, interior stuff, and lid

And I'm going to shoot the Lee Enfield this weekend, first time I'll try it since the full-wood conversion....cannot wait !

Here are some more. Nice thing is that I can fit a couple of boxes of ammo under the Lee

I hope you appreciate this small project of mine.

Dovetail in maple are hard to do, but I'm getting good

Lookin' Good, I like your dovetails ( good work). I've been debting on building a chest and I've been googling,I've seen different joints on the boxes. On the CHEST -No.4 Mk.1 T drawing it shows 1" pitch on the drawing. On the web its shows two different joints ,one dovetail is different then the 1" pitch and a straight joint like a finger joint. So, different factories or for different countries???

Admirable work...inspiting!
Have you considered making projects for more rare objects...like Ross forestocks etc...Ross transit box if such thing existed?
J

Thanks for the comment. and no, I did not consider anything else. Main reason I bought the Lee Enfield is that it was the gun we used in the "Guard" for drill when I was in the Sea cadet long ago, and I don,t know anything about the Ross. I could do something if I had one...

I once read somewhere that the hardware used in the no 7 and No 4 T transit boxes is identical. What is the difference? I have also noted that there was a variety of spacing used in the finger joints on the four corners of the box, some boxes I have seen are 5/16 inch, but pictures I took of the no 4 t boxes years ago appear to have 1/2 inch spacing. Anyone have some measurements of the fingers on the corners of their boxes?
