Hi,

Newbie here.

I got some questions regarding to make my own precision rifle.
After I read a lot post here in CGN, I started thinking to build one for my own.

So far, the whole thing still only an idea. I'm not looking for any calibre, or stock with different style.
I'm only trying to gather enough information so I can have some ideas how to proceed everything.

Anyone knows where to find action/barrel assembly? Or you just take out the assembly from other rifle?
I'd rather to get an brand new assembly instead of take out the assembly. Pros/cons?

Thanks.

We will need much more information to answer your question. First pick a caliber and action. When I start to plan a build, I first consider what type of game and the range I will be hunting. Then I decide on the overall weight for the rifle including optics. Then the type of stock to be used. Will you be shooting prone and need a pistol type/vertical or a conventional hunting style stock? Once all these decisions have been made I start looking into the bullet I will build the gun around. You can order a custom reamer or buy one already made for the bullet of your choice. These are just a few of the basic steps to get you started. It is a lot of fun collecting the parts for a build and Gary at Big Horn Sales should be able to help you. Good Luck.

Give Gary at bighorn sales a call, I just went through the same thing this week and after a half hour conversation with him he had me in exactly the direction I wanted to go. He was very helpful and can tell you everything you need to know and help make your decision.

As said Gary at Bighorn is a great guy to deal with for anything you might need, very good pricing and top notch service.

If you visit my website and look in the Tech/Rifle section, I have several articles on DIY type builds.

Maybe that is what you are interested in???

As was said, start with clear goals on the layout, features and spec you want to end up with.... THEN a realistic budget.

From there, the parts are very easy and will only take a few minutes to sort. I help shooters every week with this exact question. Those with the highest level of success always started with clear goals and an achievable budget. There are so many parts that it can be overwhelming... especially when they don't work well together.

That is what my job is... suggest the right parts that will fit goals/budget.

I can't tell you what you want... but I can sure help with what works to make what you want happen.

Hi,

Thanks to you all. I started have some ideas of it. Yes, I do have a lathe and mill, but no, I'm not skilled enough to do so.
My idea is to gather all the parts, if there are the parts I can do it on my own, I'll do it. If not, I'll send them to the gunsmith to do it for me.
I'll try to figure out a bit first then talk to Gary. Thanks.

Mystic Precision:
Thanks for your reply. I have checked your pages and there are a lot of choices.
I'll look into it to find more possiblilities for my rifle. Thanks.

Before picking any components you definitely have to decide what type of shooting you want to do with it. If you're into benchrest you build a benchrest gun, TR, F-class, precision, hunting, etc... No rifle is good at everything.

Hirsch Precision carries quite a few actions, barrels, triggers, scopes, etc, its where I get most of my stuff.
