Making Slugs

I really like the 525 gr. Lyman slug with Win. WAA12R wad,, Fed 2.75'' paper basewad hull (Me likee the pink ones for slugs......no mix up of slugs/shot), W209 primer, and Blue Dot or SR 4756.Also good with Win. AA hull, same wad, primer, Sr 4756.The Blue Dot load does cloverleafs at 50 yards out of my fully rifled 870 with iron sights.5% reduced loads are very accurate as well, and a little kinder on the shoulder. The Blue Dot and SR4756 loads produce stout recoil.

For the Lee 1 oz, so far have tried Fed trap hull (paper basewad) Waa12 orr WT12 (interchangeable), Alliant Green Dot or Red Dot (Different amounts of course), W209 primer. Based on 1 1/8 oz. trap loads in Lyman Shotshell book. Also tried AA hull, WAA12R wad, W209 primer, SR 4756.Also, trimming 1/4'' or a little more off the wad petals of WAA12 is supposed to help crimp and accuracy,or so they say.But THEY say a lot of things...............

Note---- If you are thinking of using the WAA12R wad-----------------

Original Winchester manufactured WAA12R wads are discontinued. They are great, but now a great golden oldie, which is crappy.

Check out Cast Boolits site.So much info on casting for shotguns there, a whole separate forum loaded with how to's, pics, and data.

A company called Claybuster makes clone versions of many popular wads, including this one.
However, in the case of WAA12R, it is not an exact copy.Strengthening ribs/vanes were added on the petals of their version of this wad, making the petal spread apart when a slug is pushed to the bottom of the shotcup. The original Winchesters do not have this, the slugs seat perfectly without spreading the petals outward. From what I understand, accuracy may suffer using the Claybuster clone in place of the original.

Of course I find this out only after I purchased 2000 of the clone wads........sh!t.

On the brighter side, I have had some luck using this Claybuster clone for cast buckshot 00 loads with SR 4756 with the petals cut off.
