Making wind flags

You can find wind socks online for probably cheape than it would be to make your own flag setup. Just buy a sock and a long pole or dowel

For 50 and 100 yard shooting with a .22 I use a 3/16 wooden dowel pushed into the ground. I then take a piece of trail tape about 18 inches long and tie one end to an empty 9mm case with an elastic band. Drop the 9mm case on the top of the dowel and there you have a wind flag.

How much wind do u half to adjust for in a .22 at both thoes ranges?

I shoot aperture sights for this as well as long range. I usually turn the knobs on the sights to suit the mean wind condition. From there if I detect a slight pick up or drop off in the wind I will shade the sights slightly. If the condition continues after that shot I will adjust the sights again.
The nice thing about shooting smallbore (US) is that you can always go back onto your sighting target.

In Benchrest I do not like adjusting my optics after the match has started. I will hold over using the rings.

As Maynard said about the sighter target, sighters are your best friend if the sport allows multiple sighters. In Benchrest shoot as many as you like then you can go back up to the record target.

Like the others, just a piece of orange hunters tape fastened to a stick or branch laying around. Plain and simple.

Yep walk into the bush. Cut some brush down. Take a 16"ish piece of flagging tape and tie it to the top.

I put them every 100 yards. Then you have a good idea what's happening with the wind all the way to the target.

Good flags are easy to make.

Corplast
Fluorescent vinyl from a advertising business
3" round wooden craft balls
Smallest carbon arrow shafts you can find that will fit into the corplast
3/4" Delrin
Set screws and you have all the materials to make a clone of the Graham Wind Flag.

Yes a stake with surveyors tape will work but not ass effectively as a flag with a vane for direction and the tape for velocity.

Do you have a picture of the finished project?

Rather than trail tape, go to Walmart and get light fabric ribbon (comes in many colors). It's cheap and works just as good as trail tape, only you don't need to keep replacing it all the time. The trail tape deteriorates quickly and breaks off. You end up having to replace it every time you want to shoot.

Here is a mini

version of the flag. I made this one up as a joke. But it is the exact same thing as a full sized flag.

thx alot, turns out I had everything in stock to come up with something.
Though as absurd as it seems, I don't know where to find coroplast (yes I know there were elections just last week, but they cleaned up pretty fast and I don't think it's worth driving 50k to find one that's still hung up)
I'm thinking a "For Sale" sign

cheap easy and effective wind sock.substitute whatever you have on hand.

take the nylon lining out of an old jacket.
cut off a sleeve.
bend a piece of wire coat hanger(anything that will hold shape, the lighter the better) into a circle the same diameter as the large end of the sleeve.
wrap the big end of the sleeve around the coat hanger and sew/glue/tape it in place.
Heat a nail and poke holes in the nylon behind the wire.
Attach lines(I used fishing line) to the wire through the holes and to a key ring/washer/what have you on the other end.
mount it so it pivots freely and you are done(step in poly electric fence posts are light and portable if you have to take it with you)
-you may want to reduce the size of the cuff end to heighten sensitivity to light winds.
-a long cone is what you are after
-I sewed the second one I made into the shape I wanted

when I made a wind vane for Cub Scouts I used a piece of arborite ;)

You can buy a sq meter of that nylon in bright colors too...bout 10 bucks at a fabric shop....that stuff will tear along straight.....just as good as you can ever cut it.

What is the best location for wind flags?

I'm wondering what the best location would be for wind flags. The range where I shoot is about 75 meters wide with fairly tall trees. Bordering each edge. If I were to set up some flags what would be the best strategy? Down the middle? Staggered? Along each side?

Suggestions?

not trying to be funny

but where the wind blows,

usually the wind has patterns and place them at 10 yards apart at first to see where the patterns form,

and over time you wil see where to place the flags as most ranges even with mostly treed will have areas where the wind comes out of the trees on a more regular basis,

try it and see
