I've been wondering about this for a while now. Not sure this is the best section for such a question, maybe i should ask in "Legalese"...here it goes anyway.

Since there is no capacity limit for rimfire rifles, Would it be illegal to "make" your own high-capacity mag?

For exemple, you buy a rimfire rifle for which they only make 10-round mags. You manage to disassemble the mag, see how its made, and build your own 25-round mag, lets say. For your own personnal use that is (this is not from a business stand point).

Legal or not?

Note : i'm not looking for advice on how to get the thing done, i simply want to know if it would be legal.

And don't flame. This is intended to be educationnal.
cheers.

Since a 25 round rimfire mag designed for use in a rifle is not a prohibited device you should be good to go. Mags are either legal or prohibited, there is no in between.

Just make sure that when you design it, that it is designed to work with rimfire rifles. As soon as the manufacturer states that it is designed to work in the pistol as well, you are limited to 10 rounds.

In other words, if it coincidentally works in a Ruger Charger, even though you specifically designed it to work only in the 10-22 rifle, you'd not have the 10 round capacity limitations.

If you are working on a rifle that has not pistol counterpart, this won't affect you.

This would indeed be my situation. No pistol version of my rifle. I don't know for sure that i'll ever get around making one, i just liked the idea and wanted to know if it was worth looking into.

thanks for your answer guys, much appreciated
cheers.

Why did Ruger have to go make a 10/22 pistol and screw everything up? They already have several different 22 cal. handguns. They certainly didn't need to make a 10/22 version as well.

Of course, this really isn't Ruger's fault, it's the CFC's fault for being stupid with regards to magazines. But I need to blame someone. And the 10/22 pistol just annoys me.

sorry guys, its for none of the guns mentionned above...
But hey, nothing stops you from trying to make your own!

I've been thinkin about this myself.. got a cz452 ..and its painful to go target shooting with.. that dammed 5 rd mag is an absolute curse (alway reloadin it ) what were they thinking

mabbe someday

If you have noticed, the 'old school' high capacity magazines for .22lr rifles tended to be around 15 rounds. I think the Gevarms had 20 round mags. I think that was pretty much the limit for the 'keyhole' style magazines. The magazines were designed so the rims were staggered looking down from the top, the 'axis' of pivoting was around the case mouth, where the inside width of the magazine was narrowest, then the nose of the magazine was rounded in shape & slightly bulbous to allow the bullet noses to stagger each other. (Think Cooey 64).

Of course, you could probably make a curved magazine, single stack would probably be best. It would be a fun project.
