Anybody here fitted a long Malcolm-style scope on a BP rifle of any kind?

The reason I'm asking is that a pal of mine here fitted a Malcolm scope made by Leatherwood to his Sharps, and bearing in mind the rules of the forum, I'm not going to say what both he and I think about it.

Let's just say that there really HAS to be something better than this, since the scope is foggy, the clamp/mounts are total **** and the expensive extra side-clamp security screw is as useful as a chocolate fireguard, especially around the $1000 price level that it cost him here in UK.

I'm thinking of putting one on my High Wall replica, but as I have three spare Unertls that also look pretty cool [IMO], I'm open to suggestions. Soooooo, does anybody else have a recommended brand of suitable in-period scope?

TIA

The MVA B5 and Malcolm scopes are way better than the Leatherwood ones. I had a leatherwood a number of years ago and removed it after a very short time. I now use the MVA scopes and am very happy with them. The B5 uses the same spacing as an Unertl or STS so you can swap scopes pretty easily.

The MVA glass is very clear. On a nice sunny day I've seen .45 cal bullet holes at 200m which is pretty good for a 6x scope and my eyes :). When I used it at Kamloops last year I could see the bullet splat on the silhouettes as they were going down. Not every time, but most of the time. Except when I missed :).

Dan Zimmerman also sells a bpcr/bptr legal scope that is 8x, and comes with declicked Unertl style mounts that have 0.2" more elevation so so can use the same scope blocks from 100 yds to 1000yds ( which you can do with an MVA Malcolm, but not their B5 ). I don't have one of Dan's scopes but might try one in the future.

TBH, a tube out of the centre of a kitchen roll is better than this thing, trust me. I must look for MVA - is that Mountain View? And Mr Zimmerman - is he in Canada? I'll be over at a train meet in Nepean in July for a couple of weeks.

Thanks for the advice - much appreciated.

Edit - just emole MVA for advice and pricing since we spend a month or so in Oregon every year. Their products look beautiful, especially the Winchester-style scope........

I've always been happy with the stuff I've bought from MVA. They are top of the line. Dan Zimmerman is based out of the U.S. somewhere. He's been making his Unertl style mounts for at least a few years, but the scope itself is a more recent development.
