Hi all, is it true that effective May 17 2022, gunsmiths are required to track serial number of NR firearms serviced + keep that record for 20 years?

Many thanks!

That's a horrid thought for a gunsmith... all that book keeping for what purpose?

Where did you hear this?

True in general (unsure of the 20-yr requirement but wouldn't be surprised)

Only the 20 year requirement is recent. Gunsmiths were always required to keep track of name, address and license of origin and destination of all guns except antiques.

No that’s not true, only restricted were required until recently. The log books are actually stamped that they are only to be used for Restricted firearms. Now we’re required to “keep records” of all firearms, PAL and Address for 20 years, and submit when requested. But as all things from the Federal Gov, there were no new books supplied.

Interesting. May be a provincial difference. In QC the requirement was for all firearms except Antique for _source_. The change that came down this year was the requirement to keep for 20 years after last entry (was 5 before) and the requirement to obtain the transfer authorizations and record who the gun was sent _to_. So if you sent your NR gun in for repairs or anything at all your name address and license would be recorded as the source, but not that it was returned to you or someone else... though a signature confirming delivery had to be collected. Now they would be as both source and destination. Or you can always chalk it down to me misunderstanding something.

I know my BC authorities always asked to see my records on an inspection. I told them I was not licensed for restricted and kept no records of the firearms I repaired. I gave up my license to buy and sell so I did not have to keep a record book for them to inspect. They never liked that and told me I needed to keep names and serial numbers and dates. I did that for a few years but it consisted of a name and serial number and a date on a piece of paper stored in a box with a slot in top to drop it into. And every year it was burnt. They wanted a record ledger but they could not supply me with one for non restricted, all they could supply was the one for restricted sales... Then I did not have any inspections for years... then I retired...
