My wife and I are interested in doing a caribou hunt in northern MB. Does anyone have any experiences they can share, both good and bad?

We've hunted plenty of whitetail, and some elk, but all in southern MB. Would we be alright doing a non guided hunt, or is that asking for failure? I'm certainly not opposed to going guided.

Looking forward to any stories and advice, thank you!

Page 46 of the regulations give areas 1, 2, and 3 only for caribou. That looks like the northern top of the province except the national park, and then south to the Ontario border. That is big country with zero services between communities. I'd hire a guide, and plan on a lot of boating and/or flying. Close to the coasts you need to be very bear aware. https://www.gov.mb.ca/nrnd/fish-wildlife/pubs/fish_wildlife/huntingguide.pdf

Worked in that area when I was a young buck. I will seriously second the bear aware advice.- dan

Last caribou "hunt" I heard about in MB was out of a police vehicle with an AR... If I remember correctly it didn't quite turn out as expected for him. LOL

I paddled the Thlewiaza river up to Nueltin lake about 5 years ago. There was an abandoned tourist camp on south end of Nueltin lake. They had been outfitting for caribou but my understanding is that the number of caribou was much higher across the border in Nunavut. We found a few shed antlers but all were very old. My understanding is that closer to the coast is better. Little Duck lake was traditional hunting spot and a good place to start your research.
(Edit) After doing a quick google search, I see there is a hunting lodge on Little Duck lake.

This year or next? In 1989 I hunted out of an outpost camp of Najalini Lake Lodge, second year there was a season. It was on a lake that straddles the border basically the middle of the top of the province. Just talked to a friend today who’s Dad still lives in Thompson. He harvested a nice bull Caribou on the same lake last week. Apparently they are still some in the same area.

My fav caribou hunt was as a Manitoba Resident with a Buddy at Webber's - Smock Lake in 2008 - was a blast, the following year the herds changed migration path ...
