CWD test results

Any of you manitoba hunters know the turn around time for getting test results back? I'm assuming they won't contact you unless your deer tests positive for CWD.
My assumption is a guy just keeps entering their sample number in the manitoba government website till it gives them a result?

Any insight is appreciated, TIA

Also anyone had a deer test positive for CWD?

In Alberta a game head that is submitted in November can take until mid to end January before a letter is received in the mail advising of the test results. Usually half the animal is eaten by then:rolleyes:

That's a lot longer than I was expecting but I guess if it takes the Government two months to complete the electronic transfer of a handgun I was being naive thinking I'd have my results back in a week or two...

Yet we have to drop the game heads off within 48hrs...

Agreed it's a long time.

The process to do it however is fairly intensive. As far as I understand they have to open the skull and slice a very thin slice of brain and then put it under a microscope to examine for the prions. I suspect there is only a very limited number of trained staff to do this and many game heads to go through plus there is no real way to automate the process. It's all hand work.

That and their workload has increased significantly. In the old days in Alberta only the bordering WMUs with Saskatchewan were affected and now I saw recently in the 2022 regs that there are many more WMUs deeper in the province that are affected than previously.

Ya I took mine to a taxidermist that's local. They cut what I believe were some lymph nodes from the head. I didn't ask but that's my understanding of what they use to test for CWD. But ya with 30 000 + deer tags sold in a year alone I'm sure there will be quite a bit of backlog. I wouldn't be surprised if this deer has been eaten by the time any results are produced.

One chap over at the MB hunting forum said he got his back in two weeks, another is 3+ weeks and no result yet. Now that we're in the general season I think the backlog and wait will extend.

Thanks for the info, do you know if they were mailed the info or they used the mb government website to get their results?

This isn’t going to be helpful to you as it’s not the same province. I submitted my head in Alberta on November 2nd, says they received it at the lab on November 9th and result’s emailed to me November 15th. I assume they’d email all negative results and phone/email for positive results. I was told that they can process about 2500 a month at that lab. Samples received after a certain date wouldn’t be processed until January.

We were in an optional CWD surveillance zone. According to the Alberta government, CWD is most common in male Mule Deer so we submitted the heads and have waited for the results before consuming any of the meat.

We didn’t know this at the time it you can submit some lymph nodes from the roof of the mouth and another part of the brain if you want to keep your skull for a euromount. Otherwise cut off your skull plate. They don’t want any antlers in the freezer.

We do our own butchering and label any deer meat from the deer submitted for testing. Until we get results back we don't eat any meat from the submitted deer. We always get our results back by email. I think last year our results came by both email and the Alberta Relm app. Never had a positive come back to date. All results sent back so far have been negative.
