Well some Yah Who....

ucked it up for me tonite. I was sitting out along the edge of a pasture which is adjacent to a thick willowy draw. The deer started pouring out of the bush on the pasture. I think at one point there was about a doz or more. I was scoping them out as they came in groups of 3. Doe with twin calves. One group after another. There were a few small fork bucks along with a small 4 pointer. Last but not least was the best. The kind of buck you would want to leave for a year or two a small 5 that looked like there is some potential. All of a sudden over my left shoulder Ka Bam. What the HEY........... I guess I never heard the other truck pull into the old abandoned farm site on the adjacent property. Dear started moving but not to scared. Needless to say that 5 pointer took off. He appeared to not be very scared. I watched as the other hunter stumbled around appearing to look for blood. My last estimates were he was shooting at a doe or calf. Wandered around for about 5 minutes then took off.

Tommorrows plan. I become the PRI+++. Make sure I work that draw with another hunter to get that 5 pointer to some safer turf. That is if he sticks around there.

There are a few hunters in the area that do not know what management hunting is. Menatality is, I payed my monies I shoot my dear. Then they Bit++ there are no decent sized dear. I know for a fact if the guy was who I think he is he would have shot that furure prospect.

Went out last night with my 9 year old son. We walked some new area I have wanted to see for a long time. I couldn not beleive the sign in the area. Well beaten trails, rubs, and a decent size scrape. We setup on the downside of a ridge and waited. We had a few move through but nothing close enough to get off a decent shot. All in all it was fun.

There was also plenty of fresh wolf tracks. I have been hearing reports from fellow hunters of increasing amounts of wolf encounters in our area. Good reason for a wilderness carry ATT? ;)

Well I thought I would fill my doe tag yesterday evening, but as it turns out the the doe was a buck with about 8" antlers. It was just before sundown and he was standing 60 yards away in a clearing with trees behind him, and with open sights, I saw no antlers at all. The round ball passed through both lungs and exited at the back of the off side rib cage. He is a good size and will be good eating, but now if I see a big buck I will have let him to pass.

Well, I have been fortunate

enough to see many deer in the section of land I have beeen concentrating on. I am not sure exactly how many may be in the area but it is more than I thought going by the lack of sign. It typically is a awesome area for whitetails.

On another note I think last night was my deciding factor on my muzzleloading hunting. I am geared up to QUIT. Yes QUIT. I lost a gimme of a buck last nite. The shot was maybe 80-100yards broadside. I heard the hit. I went after him until dark and he is still going by the looks of it. It looks like he may be hit in the front leg above the knee. By the way he is moving I do not think there is a broken bone. I cannot get out so a local friend says he will do some checking for me today.

Ever since I have gotten rid of my old Thompson Center Hawken and bought my Rem 700 ML I have not had any faith in it. I have been struggling with its grouping for the last 3 years. 2 things either the Leupold scope or the barrel. I have tried many bullets and powders. My trusted bullet and load that used to work does not work anymore.

The plan is, clean it up, take it to gun shop and put the bore scope down it. Next check movement with boresighter, if all is good remove scope checking for any loose screws. They were all tight when I checked yesterday. I hope it is the scope. If not I will exchange the Leupold for my 3200 5-15 to see how it shoots. If it shoots okay then I will trade it and all that goes with it on possibly a Browning 22 cal pistol.

Sorry to hear of your tough luck, and the wounding of a fine animal, that is always tough to take. How was your luck with the old Hawken? Maybe you should go back to the old ways. My wife and I have dropped the rifle season this year, and only plan on hunting with our traditional muzzleloaders and round balls. So far I have one tag filled and she picked up a nice doe yesterday. Her shot was 75-80 yards and got a double lung hit. The doe traveled 100 yards and piled up.

The thought

has crossed my mind. I had the gun at the gunshop this AM. The scope appears to move fine according to the boresighter but that does not prove that it is solid while under the recoil impact. Next he thru the borescope down the barrel. He said the barrel is clean. I asked if any pitting and there was non at all.

Went home put the 3200 5-15 on it then to the range. I also thought of something else so I switched it as well. The Rem 700 has 2 different firing pins depending on what ignition source you use No 11 caps or 209 primers. I was using the firing pin for the 209 primers but only shooting caps. Could that be it?

Started out at 25 yards the scope moved as what I thought it should. Stretched it out to 50 yards and ran out of adjustment. What puzzles me here is I used my Burris Sig rings with a +10 in the back and a -10 in the front. I bottomed the scope out trying to lower point of impact. Went to 100 yards thinking that I may be on paper. No.... The gun is shooting 8" high at 100 yards with no more adjustment. I will have to put the 20 inserts into the rings so I have enough adjustment then try it again tommorrow. If all works well I will change firing pins and see what happens. If all still is okay I think we have a bad Leupold. I will put it on one more time and see what happens.

No matter what I have decided to not go back on my word about not hunting Muzzleloader for this year even if I figure the problem out. At one time if this had happened it would not bother me. Today all I think about is how would I feel if I were in the bucks hide. My hunting partner is not going to be happy but that is the decision I have made.

Well my second time out this year was today.Spooked two yearlings that I could have actually taken a shot at on public land at 6pm.The season is young and I am kinda looking for something a little bigger.Guess I will try again tommorow. How is everyone else doing?

Anyone hunting the Spruce Woods area? I was up there 3 weeks ago, saw some deer, mostly does, and a couple small bucks. That's where I'm heading Monday/Tuesday, so hopefully things will look better then.

Last day there I had a chance at a doe with her 3 fawns (triplets, I guess). They came out of the bush 10 mins before the end of legal light. Eventually they made there way through the field to where my stand was. For whatever reason, they kept looking away from me as they made their way over. Finally, they stopped 20 yards from my stand. She looked away, so I started drawing my bow back. For whatever reason, my arrow and rest made a loud screeching sound, and because there was NO wind whatsoever, they all heard it, looked over at me, and bolted while I was still drawing the bow back.

Hopefully I'll have better success next week!

Sorry Sean...

I stay away from hunting the crown lands close to Brandon. To many people. I am slowly starting to ask in different areas for hunting grounds. I think it is time to move on to different grounds. This will mainly be for archery. I think I have one spot set up for next archery season.

Well third time out hoping it was going to be a charm and not one deer sighting.Three outings and two yearlings are what I've seen so far things are looking pretty grim around Libau.:(
