This year's first buck for me! 100M, bang flop, heart shot. More venison in the freezer, life is good! (yes, it was a full deer, not just a head I shot :D, it was soo cold out, my camera batteries went dead. Pic was taken after skinning/hanging, etc)

We hunt SE of Winnipeg (in-laws farm).

I shot a heavy 4x4 on Monday morning and my father in-law shot a 5x7 the next morning. I was using a .270 Win (in a Savage 110) with Sierra Gameking bullets (130gr) and IMR4831 (57 gr). I'll try to post pics later.

Nice buck by the way. Good for you.

I'm getting skunked in Sandilands......

Not entirely sure why yet.. but it's been a damn tough year out there.
All my "sure bet" spots have been anything but a sure bet, and some of the primary trails are showing little signs of use.
I think the pressure is getting to them and their patterns are changing.

What part of the Sandilands are guys hunting?

Where I hunt (see above) is very near the Sandilands and we have seen a lot of deer and even more tracks. We have a pretty good spot though.

We were pretty pleased. The amazing thing is that on Tuesday evening (the same day the buck on the right was shot, except in the morning) we saw another 4x4 the same size as the one on the left. Good year for bucks on the farm this year I guess. We did some scouting before the season began but we never would have anticipated that at least three nice bucks were in the area. We got lucky!

PS - I think the key to success was my designer hunting clothes. We moved recently and I threw out all of my old clothes and I realized I did have any old pants left to use for hunting. So I went to Value Village and got a pair for $8. Turns out they're from the GAP. Goes nice with the old Ralph Lauren jacket. :D

Interesting, I tried the same load this year. did you record velocity ? unless my chrony was wrong I could not break 2800 fps with a 22" barrel.

Sierra recorded just over 3000 fps

I think so. I've seen a lot of trails that are well established, but no recent traffic. I'm south of Steinbach on the 404, so between the fire and the clearcutting the deer might be moving on.
Plus idjits driving all over the place....

I don't own a chrony. However the trajectory of the load very closely matched the expected values for 3000 fps. I don't know the actual velocity though. Do other loads produce expected velocities in your rifle? That load was also tested by Ken Waters and he got a bit better than 3000 fps in a 22" barrel (in the "Pet Loads" book he tested the .270 three times, I got this from his second test). I've used this load for two years now and have been very happy with it. I hit the heart in the buck above and the heart was basically torn in half. Mind you, it was a short shot (75 yds.). Last year I shot a small buck with it at 170 yds and it went down like it was hit by lightning. My gun likes that load.

BTW - the Sierra Manual I have (older) also shows 3000 fps but in a 26" barrel. Ken Waters got over 3100 with a 24" barrel. Beats me.
