Friend, I think you have the original stock right there. It's just that a woodcarver has got there before you.

The only Mannlicher-Schoenauer rifles adopted by the military were the Greek contract of 1903 and the later Greek rifles, all built by Steyr. They all were in 6.5x54MS.

The 8x56MS, the 9x56MS and several others all were commercial cartidges which never saw military service.

You have an absolutely beautiful old commercial rifle. Treasure it.

Somebody likely can recommend a stockmaker competent to make a stock for this one. It will cost a chunk of money for the work, so you may as well blow the bankroll and spring for a REALLY nice chunk of Turkish or Circassian walnut, do the job right.

Hope this helps.

smellie is correct there. A really nice M-S sporting rifle. Too bad the original owner couldn't find a piece of firewood to whittle on but it doesn't look THAT bad.

Numrich used to have stocks for the 1903 and 1905, check with them, also Ebay. Once you find one its an easy swap, which is great since the metal looks good.

Ride on thanks guys. The metal is good and the bore ain't too bad either is pitted and the rifling ain't sharp but its there, it took about 2 days but I did manage to clean all the crap out of the barrel. It even shoots well at 100 yards with the sights not being able to ajust for elevation 100 yards is about it. Due to the bore being well used I'm running 358 cal bullets instead of the original 356 cal (had the bore slugged at the most opened point it was .360) and I'm using the starting load in the Modern Reloading 2nd Addition for 358 win.

Just for a yuck, try .357 PISTOL bullets: softer jackets. Could go well with CAST or PLATED bullets, too.

Absolutely beautiful old rifle, though.

Did not the Austria-Hungarian Army take a bunch of them intended for Greece and use them as a 'substitute standard' during WW1?

Either the carving or the recoil pad alone would be hideous. Together, they're a tragedy. Some people's kids...

You probably won't have much luck finding a replacement stock, but you might be able to find a stock maker that could duplicate the ruined one.

I would leave her as is, the front sight has been modified to a sporter style and would be rather difficult to reverse. She is an attractive looking sporter that someone spent alot of time and energy making into the final product.

I too am not a fan of sporters but this one is quite nice and I say keep her as is.

The stock work alone adds a premium imo.
