So my buddies and I wish to get a moose this year, but time off could be an issue. I can split either way but have limited funds.

Any rate to bag a Moose ideally or a couple deer... what would you guys recommend. I can do multiple trips within a couple hours of kamloops example I can go for four days the day season opens and then a bunch of two day trips after that. Or I can do one 10 day - two week trip up north were Moose season is a wee bit more liberal, but were I have less knowledge of the area.

Now my knowledge of the kamloops area is just from camping and not hunting so I'd be from scratch around here too.

But any rate what would you chaps do?

I would say best bet is the northern trip. You will get time to know the area during your stay and then also more opportunity to be out in the bush waiting for them to come around. That's what I am trying this year for bear. Go up for the week to northern Ontario and hopefully we get to see them.

Pretty tough to do weekend trips when North is 10 hours each way...
Try Peter Hope lake area...

I have spent quite some time back in there. Before season started last year saw loads of Muley's no moose though. But mayhap I'll go back in there camping with the family.

The north trip would be just one big trip were I would use up all my $$. If I stick around down here I'd be able to do many trips.

I'm not at all familiar with hunting in B.C. but scouting out an area has always paid off for me. Find a good area for moose before the season. Allow one day to shoot the moose and two days to pack it out.

Yeah, my one buddy is advising for trips into areas we kind of know.

I am partial to going north, but if I get skunked that's a hard hit. Where as if I get skunked down here it is a bit easier to take. (In other words the wife won't bug me for being gone two weeks and coming back empty handed lol)

Also being new it may wise to play it safe and close to home.... but the big risk big rewards idea is fun

I have hunted far north and about as far south as you can go before crossing into the USA in BC for decades.

If you know where the game is locally (start scouting now) then that is probably the best idea. It will take many years to learn an area up North so it is like the back of your hand.

Also as a secondary question, is setting up salt licks in an area I wish to hunt legal?

Or is baiting (I think it's called) legal in any format?

I'd go local. Nothing like getting to know your area. And people are notoriously unreliable, someone is likely to bail from the northern trip.

How do you plan on cutting the moose's throat while it is still alive?

I have not been up there in recent years, but I shot a moose in the Pinaus Lake area.

Another area not far away is the Fly Hills range above Falkland....Moose there, and muleys were common.

Dave.

Just a thought, wouldn't doing multiple weekend trips used up more % of your budget in gas money and more % of your time would be spent on the roads instead of in the woods?

We got for a full 9 days and it gives you time to feel the rythme of the land, adjust to it's pace, etc.

I'd vote for a longer stay.

Aye your right on that. But the weekend trips would be just that which would allow me to keep working and thus I'd have more money potentially.

My wife's family owned a cabin at Pinaus. I haven't been there in a couple years. Family is from salmon arm and they don't have much luck lately on fly hills.... but yeah, could be worth it.

Nothing ventured, nothing gained.
A sure bet to not waste any precious $$ is to fill a shopping cart
at the local Costco's meat counter.
Not many mewsies around here that would be legal unless one happened
to luck out on the LEH system.
Was out yesterday bombing around and saw two grouse and one deer having
a snewze by a small pond.
Junior found the deer with her keen eyes.
I guess an ear moved.
How they blend in.

Aye looky, for me to get meat I either need to hunt or drive to surrey to get halal meat. So whatever it is per pound and $100 for gas etc.

I agree all my travels I only saw 3 moose last season. I was thinking maybe baiting is an idea for moose and deer... it seems like getting a Muley and white tail should be realistic. I am not looking for trophies I am just looking to put meat in the freezer.

Been a very ,very, very busy area the last few years .
To me it seems like every hunter from the lower main land and Vancouver Island is hunting region 3+8 .
Lots of new logging area with roads and with new roads your going to see lots + lots of quads + Side X Sides.
