I saw these advertised in the Bullseye North section of the forum. Anyone have any experience with these?

They look interesting, but they also look like a prohib in waiting. How can they get away with a 16.5 inch barrel? I get that its bolt action, and that manual action rifles have no barrel length requirement, but doesn't that just apply to guns manufactured that way? This looks to be a bunch of AR parts thrown together and attached to the Renegade top and bottom.

Any legal experts or armchair lawyers who can chime in?

Not a lawyer so do your own research but lots of folks assemble their own rifles. I think you're confusing the alteration bit. If you look in the criminal code of Canada :

non-restricted firearm means

(a) a firearm that is neither a prohibited firearm nor a restricted firearm, or......

Restricted firearm means :
(b) a firearm that

(i) is not a prohibited firearm,

(ii) has a barrel less than 470 mm in length, and

(iii) is capable of discharging centre-fire ammunition in a semi-automatic manner,

(c) a firearm that is designed or adapted to be fired when reduced to a length of less than 660 mm by folding, telescoping or otherwise, or

Prohibited firearm means :...

(b) a firearm that is adapted from a rifle or shotgun, whether by sawing, cutting or any other alteration, and that, as so adapted,

(i) is less than 660 mm in length, or

(ii) is 660 mm or greater in length and has a barrel less than 457 mm in length,

Therefore, a manual action rifle, with an unaltered barrel as it came from the factory, that's over 660mm in overall length, should be non-restricted. Unless of course it's prohibited by name.

It seems to imply that if you have a fixed stock, you could be under 660mm oal, but I am not sure when you start blurring into the definition of a handgun. Not sure about this though.

The semi-automatic center-fire minimum non-restricted barrel length rule does not apply to the Renegade, as it is manual action. Although it uses many common parts from semi automatic rifles, at its core is a manual action only receiver and bolt control group.

As a manual action firearm, as long as the muzzle device plus barrel length plus receiver length plus collapsed butt stock exceeds 660 mm, the firearm is non-restricted.

Dlask and Canada Ammo have been selling short shotgun barrels for a very long time.

People have been swapping out their longer barrels, and the gun stays non-restricted.

You can't legally CUT a barrel that short. But if the barrel was made that length, it's totally legal.

I built mine with a 8.3” barrel, guess I go straight to jail.

Maybe. Where can I get parts? I think buying the upper and lower might be most cost effective than the whole rifle already assembled. This looks like something I can piss some anti's off with, and that's more than worth it.
