As opening I'd like to say that I have spent about 20min googling and searching these forums.

The place my grandfather always took us 4x4ing and shooting my whole life from back in the 80 is up behind mount benson up off of dumont rd, just west of nanaimo. I took my friend from uk out there today to shoot some clays but I forgot my trigger lock keys at home so we had to turn around. On our way back down the dirt road we were greeted by a truck with the local university (Malaysia) and a 2nd unmarked truck. They said we were trust passing on privet property, and that they have complaints from hikers and dirt bikers saying that they've been shoot at. Now I know no matter were you go there will always be the bad apples, and I have always taken care to collect my spent shells and casings and any other garbage with me. I was shocked by this info because I've been up there my whole life, shooting, 4x4ing and camping out at boomerang lake with little to no issues. So I told them there's no signs stating this and asked if they had a map that showed this privet property. They didn't have a map so I came home and went online to look for a map. The guy said he didn't have a map so who to believe unless there's paperwork somewhere to refer to.

In sense I'm seeking somewhere I can find maps do crown land/provincial land, more so Vancouver Island.

I don't mind gun ranges so don't take it the wrong way, not looking for a forum bash flame fight, I use my local range but it's still nice to use our beautiful back yard for 4x4ing and shooting afternoon since I'm not a hunter.

Thank you for your time.

It could be leased crown land. It needs a fence and a sign to be posted. Then you have city bylaws to watch out for so really you need to know were the city limits are more then anything. If it's not posted just assume it's crown land unless it's marked then if they ask or complain it's not marked there is no way to tell if it is or isn't.

Try the BC hunting page ht tp://www.env.gov.bc.ca/fw/wildlife/hunting/regulations/ It covers hunting areas has maps for were you can and can't hunt some of them are parks.

I was told by a park lady you can't hunt in this park it's illegal I went really I have this map and the webpage of the park that says it's open to hunting and here is the hunting map. (she didn't like that 1 bit but it was 100 percent legal to do in that area)

this is what I use in conjunction with google earth, pretty much the only thing out there. It shows crown, parks, native reserves, ect

After bout 2 hours of calling and being transferred all over the place somewas able to say "They believe it's privet propity", the local RCMP were lening towards it being crown land and said there nothing wrong with discharging firearms there in a safe matter. So quite a big grey area, my job depends on my pal so I can't take any chances of losing it, I'm just more ashamed that no one has a strait answer or that maps that display updated zones are not easily accessible.
