Hi all. I am new to the forums and was hoping to get some info on the above firearm's legality in Canada. It was an over under single shot with folding stock. Upper barrel is .22 and lower is smoothbore .44-40 Game getter I think.
My problem is I don't think this thing was ever registered-----it sat in an attic for years. I don't want to buy it if I can't keep things legal.
Any info? Thanks.

The lower barrel is 44-40 in the ones that I have seen plus the ammo is stamped that way. The ones that I have seen had barrels of roughly 12" and would be considered restricted weapons (handguns) because they are designed to be shot with one hand. There is no amnesty at present for registering handguns only longuns and your only hope in doing so would to permanently weld the metal butt to the frame and even then it would be a poor odds gamble.

It's a restricted collector's piece. It's not a BP firearm or an antique.
Collector's Source has one for $895. They're not the least expensive place though.
The .44 barrel is actually for a shot shell or a round ball. There'd be some hoops to jump through to get it registered in your name. The CFC usually will register stuff that isn't to make their stats look good. Call 'em before you buy it though, just to be sure they haven't been told otherwise.
You won't be able to shoot it anywhere but a range.

I should clarify that when I said 44-40, it is actually a 44-40 shot shell and a 44-40 shell with a round ball crimped in and head stamped gamegetter in my memory is correct. I have some in the basement somewhere in my dubious filing system.

They are all restricted 15" and 18" bbls many are missing the folding butt stock and holster. There are 2 models 1st has rounded smaller grips and is chambered for the 44xl or game getter round and sometimes have a tang sight, 2nd model has larger flat grips and is chambered for the 2" .410 and also has a 3-way folding rear sight. 1st model Game Getters are worth more as they are less common.

Thank you for the replies. I guess I'll leave it where it is. It'll sit there another 30 years or so. It is an early model with holster.

I have a gamegetter, because I am a combo gun nut. Yes restricted. The lower barrel is 44 marbles or 410 2" (mine was already reamed by someone to accept modern 410). I love it. Have shot it a fair bit at the range etc.

There is no real market in Canada for them. I got mine for a few hundred bucks, and have seen another three go for the same price right around the time I got it.

My opinion would be to go for it if the hurdles of registration are not too great. I haven't registered an unregistered firearm in about 6 years, so I do not know current rules and procedures.

It is a cool firearm, and a great reminder of how things were done in the old days. If you don't go for it, shoot me a pm with details, and I would be interested in persuing getting it registered and in the safe.
