March 1 to 10th, let the Brant hunting begin..

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brant_(goose)

It's a tight little circle. they don't even discuss it on HBC any more, but communicate privately.

The guys that do it used to talk abut it, post photos and stuff, but I suspect they were concerned that they had inadvertently created too much interest in it to sustain any more hunters.

It's quite specialized, you have to know where to go, have a punt or camouflaged boat, decoys, know-how and desire.

It's always been a kind of cult-hunt. Back in the 1950s and into the 1960s before the regs got more and more restrictive there were permanent blinds set up along the shore in one hot spot, a spit in White Rock I believe, on Boundary Bay that guys would take turns occupying all week so that they had that blind for weekend.

hey rob maybe you could shed some light on this for those of us in the dark thanks lbo

lbo, I just watch from the beach now.
Shift work doesnt allow me the freedom to join in :(
There was a time when they would be able to hunt in a blind with five shooters on the beach.
Move the blind up and down with the tide.
I know there are one or two who post here on CGN and have gone a far a road trip to Mexico chasing these birds.
Sorry I can not provide more details or pictures, but it was a beautiful day on the water I saw and the 10 layouts in the two bays.
Some guys limited by 09:30 and others are still on the water in the sun....
Blackie Spit in White Rock BC ;)

Nope from just two days ago up here. I haven’t been back to Mexico since 2013 and 2014. Would of went this year but had another kid so bad timing.

Bottom two are fatter then most I’ve ever shot up here. They’ve been eating good

Where are you guys laying out ?
Boundary Bay or between the Container Port and the Ferry Causeway ?
Blue Bird days and not many birds flying from what I have heard.
Congrats on your birds.
Still have four more days of opportunity.

I haven't seen any mention of brant hunting in decades. When I was in college in the early 80's,a couple of us would head down to hunt the shoreline on lake Ontario, after the Kawartha lakes froze, and pick up a few brant singles along with the usual buffleheads that would buzz the decoys.I remember there was some question about brant's being legal, since they weren't mentioned in the hunting reg's at the time, but we verified this beforehand and they were later included along with the Canada's in the reg's.

We used to see large flocks of them flying low along the waterline on the St.Lawrence river later in the fall as well but they never seemed interested in decoying.I bet it's been over 3 decades since I've seen them on my area of the St.Lawrence.
