I'm currently hunting for a Mares Leg on the EE and have a couple of leads. 45colt or 44mag are the calibres I'm leaning towards.

The question is, who out there has handled the various "mares legs" and how would they rank/rate them in fit, finish, quality of performance and accuracy. AFAIK the main ones out there are the; Henry, Chiappa, and Rossi.

So what are the goods, the bads and the uglies and with these novelty carbines and why?

I got a Rossi Hand rifle in 44 mag now fitted with a long stock, quality is very good and accuracy with the long stock, under 4 inchs at 100 metres, with the short stock it is shooting the same group at 50 metres... Cheers.JP.

My henry is very nicely built and the action is smooth. I've never shot a group with it though. Seems to hit where its pointed. I've grouped my 22 mares leg and it did about 4" open sighted and 2" scoped at 50 yards from a rest. I know it would shoot better with better ammo too. I think my brass will scratch pretty easy too.

did you get it from wanstalls? the stock I mean? I want to have a full stock around for some more accurate shooting, and heavy loads in the future.

I have a henry ML in 22 cal - never handled a henry before getting this one - and am very impressed - smoothest lever I have handled- accuacy was decent - after the first 400 rounds the novelty wore off so I found myself a youth stock for a henry and swapped out the ML stock - you want to see a cool rig - lever 22 with a 13 inch barrel - it seems to turn more heads than the ML did - and you can actually his something with it...

No i had a brand new Rossi 44mag 24 inch octo barrel and i just swap the stock... took me 2 brand new rifles to make the Super Shorty 44 mag... Cheers. JP.
