Marine Magnum increasingly scarce?

Hi guys,

Just curious ... I received my new Cabelas catalogue (Canadian) a couple of days ago and noticed (once again, I think) that the Remington Marine Magnum is not among the many many shotgun offerings.

And it seems that you never ever see it in gunshops or stores anymore ... at least here in Canada. It appears that it's still in production ... but Internet chatter would seem to indicate that it's now based upon the "lesser-quality" Express platform ... as opposed to whatever (?) it was based upon back in the good ol' days.

I have one that I bought at SIR in Winnipeg in early 2007, and I think it's just about perfect as a Big Gun in wilderness country.

I think that it's also a handsome and simple and elegant design, but perhaps it's not sufficiently "tactical-looking" for the current market of "defense-oriented" buyers?

Does anybody know more than I do?

Thanks!

Hey Bollox,

Thank you ... mystery solved, and good info to have. I obviously wasn't too thorough ... I was just observing, rather than searching/researching.

I notice that they also offer a wide variety of Police 870's. I thought that those models were from a previous era and very hard-to-find ... and I'd read that there were significant mechanical upgrades ... several comparison charts that detail the differences between Police and regular are available online. Would all the Police models on the Wolverine website be current production, with the same beefed-up components that made the old ones so desirable? Or just Mossberg-style marketing/packaging.

The history of the Police designation would make it a killer marketing tool.

Yup, Wolverine has them. That's where I bought mine. I was lucky enough to get the ultra rare 870 Police Marine Magnum (model # 25047.)

All of the Police models at Wolverine should have the "beefed up" components.

I used to teach math, and the concept of intersecting sets of Venn diagrams ... and you (lucky bugger) got the best of all possible worlds ... good taste, best materials, overbuilt strength and best/proven/classic design. :)

The only real difference is some of the springs are stronger and there are no MIM parts, plus the trigger guard is made of sintered metal rather than tough plastic. Plus the Police guns are parkerized or blued vs the matte bluing on the Express line.

Other than that, an 870 is an 870, so they say.

I personally would much rather have the Police model though...

I have the 870 Police with walnut and I think my trigger guard is polymer.

I love the Police Marine Magnum but it's 1000$...plus, it's weird it doesn't say Police on it. :p

Unfortunately MIM parts are present on every 870 model including the Police. To be slightly more precise: Trigger, Sear, Ejector, Sight bases and sights plus something else, but I can't find it right now.

I heard a gunsmith, who has worked on 870s for decades, say he has seen all but one MIM part fail prematurely. The bias against them is largely attributed to it being pumped up on the internet by purists.

Not quite sure what you are saying here. Do you mean he's only seen one MIM part fail prematurely, ever?

My Marine Magnum has been flawless. It has the plastic trigger guard and MIM extractor. I bought an extra forged extractor just in case ($14) but it will likely just collect dust and get lost. As above, they're nickel plated inside and out and require zero rust proofing care.
