a buddy of mine got a sporterized mark 1 the other day. he took it home, took a shot and the front sight fell off, looked like it was glued on previously. now hes wondering if there is a way to put an optic on it. nothing special, doesnt need to be crazy accurate, but enough to hit a deer at 100 yards, i was thinking a side reciever mounted sks type mount. anyone have any ideas?

If the barrel on that rifle is full length is is REALLY foolish to modify that rifle any further. Any MkI Ross deserves to be restored by any means necessary. They only made 9,000 of those and almost all of then have been lost to time. If he wants a Ross to hunt with I have a very nice MkIII sporter here that I did a lot of work to restoring it as best as I could last winter. I would trade him straight across no questions asked.

Also the MkIs may require a special load. Factory ammo may produce high pressure in them due to a really tight bore. I shoot 30gr IMR4895 behind a 220gr hornady .308 RN bullet loaded to an OAL of 3.05" in my MkI and I use that smaller bullet in my MkII* also as it has the tight bore as well.

I would also be interested in this rifle, and I`m sure others as well. Lots better guns for deer hunting around.

Flying pig is correct about the ammo, and adding a scope would be a step backward for this rifle.

If it`s just the front sight, put another one on that does not alter what`s there.

Looks sharp! Is it for sale.....?

It may be in the near future. I just got an awesome new job and will be going to school for it in the fall. Awesome, but I had to take a sizeable reduction in pay right out of the gate.
