This may be OT, but I'm hoping that one of you lads might know the answers to these questions. I bought my son a Mark 1 steel helmet (Brodie pattern Commonwealth WW1/2 type) at the CHAS gun show in Edmonton yesterday but forgot to get Clive Law's book "Tin Lids". This helmet is stamped GSW S MK 1 1941 on the underside of the brim and has a plain web chinstrap (not elasticized) with no rubber skull pad above the harness. My questions are: should there be such a rubber pad on the Mark 1, and, who was the maker GSW? All info greatly appreciated.

My son is 7 and wants to wear the helmet all day. It reminds him of his great-grandfather and great uncles, who wore such an item in the service of King and Country in both world wars. God Save The Queen!

GSW = General Steel Wares ( ? spelling?). Not into helmets ( yet ) so someone else will have to comment on the rubber pad that probably should have been there.
