Just picked this up and noticed some markings on the stock that don't seem to show up anywhere else. Was hoping someone might have an idea what they mean or maybe have seen them before. Some of the theories so far is kills, markings for a left handed shooter for using stripper clips or a reminder of the number of rounds it holds. The thin lines running across the larger markings are scratches, not finger prints.

Looks like handling or crate damage to me. A Red Army soldier caught defacing Stalin's rifles would have had a very bad day once a superior found out.

Good point about them not wanting to mark the rifles.

yes markings.... adds $500 in value :)

Looks like damage to me....shoot her hard

Yeah guess it's damage, oh well it's different. Thanks for the replies.

The scratches look like they came from and SKS charging handle rubbing the stock. The dark marks, ???? But I doubt they were put there on purpose.

The fine lines are from the knurling on the cocking piece (bolt assembly). Probably so are the deeper marks. Check under the hand guard to see if the country of origin (Russian) and cartridge are laser etched on the barrel. I bought a few of these. They come 2 in a flimsy cardboard box with the bolts and bayonets tossed in loose with no packing material at all. All the boxes I saw were flattened. Some really nice pre-war stocks all bashed up for the sake of 50 cents worth of bubble wrap.

Since lots of these are bashed up, I will post a thread on how I have refinished some of mine.

Yeah Marc that kind of carelessness is rather upsetting. Sure they're surplus rifles and not being sold for big bucks but there are plenty of us out there that appreciate these pieces of history as well appreciate them being treated with a little respect, especially the more handsome less kicked around examples.
