Well I just finished a Level I and Level II precision course at the Rob Furlong Marksmanship Academy.
Course was amazing.
I always thought I knew quite a bit about shooting until I finished level 1. Been shooting my whole life and have regularly plinked long distance shooting from 500-1K yds.
This has been a humbling experience and from what I gathered from other students, it was the same.
Speaking for myself, I realized I do not know really that much, and have really been fumbling through the process my whole life. Level 1 set the fundamentals and gave you a no nonsense “this is how it is done” process. It has taken me from a “good” bad shooter at shorter distance to a rookie “good shooter” at longer distance.
The instructors are awesome as they are extremely experienced. Very friendly and literally right beside you as soon as they you struggling with a task. Their attitude is just the best.
We had approx 14 people in our class which were grouped into shooter spotter combinations that would switch regularly. So we have 7 people shooting at one point with 3 instructors so you basically have 1 instructor to 2-3 students shooting at one time. That tells you what kind of attention that you will receive. Guys were shooting everything from 6mm all the way up to 338 Lapua.
The equipment supplied on site is top of the line. Spotting scopes, tripods(yes it makes a difference), rifle rentals(Cadex Precision Rifles), targets, ammunition provided(all match), is 110% top of the line. Lights(Hit Indicators) that get lit when you hit the long targets make shooting 1K so much easier. Especially if you are shooting a small caliber as they are extremely hard to see past 700m. I did not see any equipment that was used that could be even considered sub par.
It also doesn’t matter if you are a “MOA” guy or a “Mildot” guy. They make it work.
Level I takes you to 1km and you are feeling pretty damn happy with yourself. But it gets better.
Level II well, that takes you to another level. Shooting to 1600M. Bring your Kestrel
The Kestrel instruction is 110%. Once you dial that in, you realize what is possible. I’m new to this device but now I can’t even think about going shooting/hunting without it.
Hitting moving targets up to 500m that are literally 1 ft wide. The whole class was hitting this repeatedly. I remember standing back behind the firing line, at a target that I could barely see with the naked eye, that was moving at pretty quickly and people were just nailing it at 500m. It was quite impressive. Kestrel to the rescue with the calcs.
Shooting from a tripod and people are hitting targets ( 1x2 ft 200-900 m and 4x4ft from 1000m +) from 200 m all the way to a mile. Sounds crazy but it happens and its regular. They got the system and it works. And the best thing is if you want to learn wind, this place offers up the worst. Its nuts. Its 11:00 at 8 mph then suddenly its 9:00 at 15 mph.
To summarize, If you are thinking about taking a course to “sharpen up your skills” or just to learn from having no experience, then I think this a great place to start and finish. 5 stars in my books.
