This has had me wondering for a while. I've got a small collection of milsurp pistols. Two of them (an Enfield revolver and a Tokagypt) have light scratches or grooves running straight inside the barrels. They seem to be cut into the grooves as well as the lands.

Would this be left from a crude manufacturing process? Or, could it be from cleaning the barrels with an abrasive?

Definitely sounds like a hard steel cleaning brush was used, I have seen this all the time on old American arms cleaned improperly with M16 cleaning kits :)

Some pics. It's actually just the Tokagypt with the the marks. I'm not upset- it shoots fine and only cost me $125

That's interesting!
Boring tool marks would be perpendicular to the bore's axis and only on the lands.
Are the marks present on both the lands and grooves (can't tell, could be reflections)?
If so, it's either a lapping gone wrong or sand shot through the barrel.

It appears as if they are in the grooves as well, but you could be right about the reflections. I guess I could try putting a thin strip of paper down the barrel to block off reflections.
