I know there are some on here that go to the Marlborough Forest Pit off Paden road to target shoot. Just a heads up the city has posted signs no more target shooting. A few fellas out last week had the tactical unit show up while they were target shooting.

I spoke with Rod Keith the area forester. He has acknowledge that the city has banned target shooting at the pit. His claim is because of the garbarge. I asked why the public and shooting community wasn't aware of this decision. He said the city made it known by posting signs. So I asked why hunter's were not asked for input "None required".

I asked if he was aware that a TAC unit showed up there when some people were out shooting he wasn't aware. He said if we have any complaints on how things were handle to call his supervisor.

Start calling people and show your displeasure with this or it won't be long and hunting will be banned in there to.

One more thing when I asked if hunting will be shut down altogether he wouldn't answer.

Banned target shooting years ago in Brighton WMA, not long after someone went to the effort of making a decent covered shooting platform, blaming all the garbage and crap on shooters when it was really guys blasting around on motorized vehicles.

Well, it (hunting) is shut down as of the posted signage.
No Shooting= No Hunting....
You might be able to get some discussion going on with your local council, but once it is closed it is almost
impossible to have it re-opened.
At least that has been my experience here in the Lower Mainland of BC.

I took this photo of the sign on May 18th. It takes me a good 40 minutes to drive to the pit and let me tell you that I pissoff when I saw the sign. Need I say that when I saw a starling in the pit and I "hunted" that bird until my mag was empty. NOTE: A small game licence tag also permits you to hunt American crow, brown-headed cowbird, common grackle, house sparrow, red-winged blackbird or starlings and other animals not scheduled under the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act, 1997 (e.g., groundhogs).

We have these signs in our area as well. They say no shooting EXCEPT for hunting.

It would seem to make sense it would be around the signs. Making sense doesn't mean it is so.
I've searched the Ottawa By-Laws website and I couldn't find any changes to the designation for the Marlborough forest. Discharge of firearms is still allowed. I found no reference to this new signage. I'm curious how this came about given there was no consultation and no indication on the by-laws site. I guess I'll have to call the quoted number to find out the back story.

The stupid thing about this is that the Pit is a relatively safe place to target shoot (actually having a backstop.) People who don't want to pay for a range membership will now find a less safe area in the woods and shoot there. Pretty soon there will be no discharge at all in the forest.

From what I have heard it is like most other known shooting areas around the country. There have been many threads where you see pictures of these areas and it is shameful. On the other side of the coin, you have good guys that get together and clean up these areas on a somewhat regular basis...so that they don't get closed down. You'll find those threads on this site about those projects as well. The pics that show the amount of shot up garbage and spent hulls says it all.
I'm not surprised that the site was shut down and I don't really think you can blame the city for this. They are just reacting to an ongoing problem of shooters that not only go there to shoot and not pick up after themselves, but actually bring all kinds of garbage out to shoot up and then leave it there as well.

It's too bad that the few bad apples ruin it for those that are responsible and clean up after themselves.

This is ridiculous, I knew this was going to happen. We've cleaned up that place a few times once taking back 2 chairs and over 20 garbage bags. That day we didn't even get to shoot because we were too busy cleaning.
