I have a Marlin 1894 in .44 Mag that I would like to mount a scope on.
It is a Bushnell Trophy Red dot.
The question I have is can I put the mount on using just 2 holes? It is a weaver 63B base. There are four holes on one end and two on the other.
If I turn it around and line up two of the four holes with the front two holes on the rifle, the base will hang out over the barrel, but I will be able to mount the scope ahead farther in a kind of scout fashion.
Will this give enough support for the base as it is a pretty light scope?
Or it it just a bad idea in general?
Here are some pics of what I mean. Everything is just loose fitted.

the marlin 1894 takes a 63BS base. not a 63B. sir has them for $7.99. you should really be using all four holes to mount the base on your reciever.it would be wicked to have the animal of a lifetime at 50 yds.,only to find your red dot came loose and was not zeroed. the .44 mag has a fair amount of recoil.the scope mount is meant to be attached completely.

According to the Weaver base chart it take the 63B If memory serve a 63BS is the same but in stainless/silver...

That is kind of what I thought about the mounting though.
Recoil is not really harsh with this rifle, but would hate to miss the big one... And since I know where he is....

You are planning on having a fair amount of weight cantilevered on a small mounting surface (just two mounting holes.)

You won't do any damage to the scope but I wouldn't bet anything important that the mounting holes will survive very long...you might find the extra fine threads in the two holes you use won't survive.

So ask yourself how much you like that receiver.

Thanks guys. It was just a thought. I had pretty much figured I was going to get the answers that I did. Just wanted to see if anyone had any experience with it thats all.
I will be mounting it in the proper way, with all the holes...

Thanks for the info though..
