I recently purchased a Marlin 1894S from a fellow gunnut and I've noticed that the breech bolt does not lock up firmly when the lever is closed. It's got 1/32" of play when the lever is closed and the hammer cocked. I've also noticed that I'm getting alot of powder residue blowing into the receiver which suggests to me that the bolt should be tighter.
This is my first experience with a Marlin 1894 and I have no idea if this is normal. The fellow I bought the rifle from says that it came like that when it was new.
Is this normal?
Is there anything that can be done to tighten up the breech bolt when the action is closed?
Thanks for any tips or suggestions:)

Loose bolt

Are you finding that slack with or without a chambered cartridge brass? The rim on the brass may make the difference if you don't have one in the chamber. Use an empty case to check.

Blow back of powder residue is common with loads that do not have enough pressure to expand the case tightly to the chamber walls. Not unusual with mild loads.

Thanks for the reply's.
With an empty case in the chamber I get about a 1/3 less play but it's still noticable.
Can anyone recommend a good lever-action smith in Vancouver area?
