Marlin 1895 configurations

I am one the market for a Marlin 1895 rifle in 45-70. They come in two configurations, one with a straight grip and a 18.5-inch barrel (guide gun), the other with a pistol grip with a 22-inch barrel.

I am leaning in favour of the guide gun configuration, but I am not sure if the 18.5-inch barrel is ported (may be much too noisy), or if the straight grip will increase the perceived recoil more than a pistol grip would.

Any comments?
 
I have a 45-70 Marlin 1895GS and it has a straight stock. I like it but knowing what know now if I had to do it over again, I'd go for the pistol grip design as I have on my Marlin 444S if possible. I find that with some of the heavier more potent reloads the recoil, with the straight stock & lever, can be a little hard on the fingers.
Also, I don't care for porting, on any gun. The only gun I still have it on is my 500 S&W and that will be coming off in the not too distant future.

I love my Marlin 1895GS in 45/70 its a quick pointing and easy handling rifle. The straight stock does have little more recoil than a pistol grip stock but 45/70 doesn't kick anyway. I load my 45/70 very very hot and I find it enjoyable to shoot. Just make sure the scope doesn't get you in the eye :).

If you want the best Marlin levergun, get the 1895 XLR in 45/70. I got one for my birthday last year, and it does shoot one MOA. It has a nice recoil pad on it, hardly any greater felt recoil than a 308. I can hardly wait to shoot it when I get it out at Easter!

I am looking at one too, but I don't want a 24 inch barrel. I see that as defeating the main strengths of the gun; it beoing a qick handling bush gun.
 
I have a Leupold 1x4 mounted on mine and it wouldn't take too much to 'ring' me, especially with the heavier loads. What scope do you have on yours and and details on the mounts and how you attached them?

Its a Burris 2x20 long eye relief scope mounted to an XS scout scope rail with Leupold quick release rings.
 
I was at the hardware store tonight and shouldered a guide gun and a 444 they had. I noticed that the 444 had a longer buttstock. I had never noticed that before.

Are the 1895's the same or is this just the 444? I have never noticed this before.
