Marlin 1895 feeding issues

Any gunsmiths recommended to work on these? Cowboy shooters crowd .It is an older straight stock pre-crossbolt safety model in 45-70.Don't have the tools/knowhow to do it myself nor want Gravel to change out any parts made by Remington.Lifter is not raising the next shell even when roughly cycled.From the shoulder it's no go but if you bring the gun down it works better.I'm sure it just needs tweaking /polishing as machining marks abound.Cuts 1/2 " groups at 100 yards with either 300gr HP or 350gr FN handloads and a 4x Leupold...I'm aware of the Marlin website......Harold
 
I've had a similar issue with my 1894 and the carrier and bolt. There are potentially two problems with the Marlin. Either your extractor spring tension is too strong and sometimes does not allow the next round to slip under it and rest flat on the bolt face that eventually drives the round forward. The other possible cause is the carrier not raising high enough.

I addressed both issues when I slicked up my 1894.

Google the "Marlin Jam" and see if you have this issue. It's basically a notch that gets worn into the lifter by part of the lever and it lowers feed reliability. There are fixes if you have it, but read up and check it yourself before seeking more help.
 
I'll have to defer to another CGN-er then, all the smiths I know and trust are generally in Eastern Canada. Plenty of good smiths out your way, but I don't know them! :)
