I have always wanted a 45-70 and could never decide whether to get a lever or Ruger single shot. So local gun store has the Marlin. Very nice looking gun (IMO)has 24" barrel.

This gun will likley not be used for hunting, mainly range time and a caliber I have always been interested in. I would reload and eventually cast as I am already set up (except not in this caliber) for both.

I have heard some not so good things about QC on "Remlins" but nothing definative despite my google search. Can anyone direct me to a site with more information? Anyone have any input? Good or bad?

Should I keep looking for a Ruger? I really don't want to break the bank on this one, however do not want to regret what I by. Anything else out there I should consider?

Now don't get me started on my next have to get.............22 Hornet!!!!!!

Thanks for any input/advice.

If you get the Marlin you must see the serial number if the prefix is not 91-92-93 as starting digits you have a true Marlin not Rem .With the rem some are good more are bad.

Invest in some dummy round cycle the action and put some in the feeding tube ,check the front site to see if it is straight

While I love the Ruger ,it is not the most pleasant thing to shoot from the bench, while the longer barrel Marlin will be accurate and moderate in recoil

my 2 cents worth

I have a marlin 1895gs (stainless guide gun) and its just plain fun to shoot. It was built in 2005 and the fit and finish is great. I'm not impressed with the remlins that I have seen. The cowboy 1895cb is another pretty cool rifle. I handled a stainless laminate ruger #1, and that was a big mistake. If I ever get the chance and money, I'll buy one. So I guess I'm no help because I vote for both!!!!!. If you have the coin, check out the browning made 1886 winchesters and the new Sharpes that are made in Montana.
Check out the marlinowners site, lots of info there.
