Ya, I'm starting to think that whoever was telling me 2300 (I can't even remember) was, shall we say, optomistic. Amphib's report back there of 2150 sounds more like it.

Actually I'll likely be doing more load development for the 350gr Hornaday in my 45-70 this weekend :D

a few things that can make your guidegun a little more user friendly:

"Skeletonizing" the front hood and installing a Williams Firesite. this sucker is BRIGHT! and makes finding your front post very fast! chopping the hood can be done at home with a dremel, be sure not to take to much off, it won't hold if if you.

Hey? Where's your Crossbolt safety?? there is a special place in hell reserved for Marlin Crossbolt safeties. the first time you draw down on a critter, squeeze the trigger, and hear a metal-on-metal "Whap!" you will want to toss your rifle in the river. for $12us you can buy this lovely filler screw kit from a fella in the states that fixes the problem.

the William sites are nice. leave the peep in for hunting, unscrew it for ghost rings during non-hunting/guiding senarios.

it is the Williams FP336 site. and yes, it mounts to the factory rear scope base holes

I bought it, and the front firesite from Reliable in Vancouver for $145 tax in. (installed and boresighted)

the filler kit is available from:

Clyde Ludwig (414) 536-1101 *after 6pm CST

Thanks Amphib, where did you purchase your Williams sights and the filler screw kit?

Has anyone used the XS sights for this rifle?

MikeyT, a have several Marlins but fortunately (IMHO) they are all old enough to be made with out the cursed lawyer button cross bolt safety. :D

I have heard though, and it makes sence, that if you find the right sized little rubber O ring you can slip it over the notch on the cross bolt safety "locking" it in the fire position. Not as good as the kit that buddy makes but if your in a pinch......

Hey Amphib, I guess you might as well get rid of that hammer extension now that your a born again scope hater eh :p :D

never getting rid of that extension :D with wet, cold or gloved hands, it is king. and as this rifles follows me on diving trips it has seen all three at the same time on a few occasions.

Good point, I guess it'd be pretty easy to find the hammer even with mits on. A guy at our club gave me one but I haven't bothered doing anything with it. I might just see a use for it now :)

I was a little curios so I went down to the local shop to checkout 45-70 ammo. Holy crap there big. They must pack a hell of a whallop! I want one now:D
