I've been considering a 22 mag bolt action for a while. Almost sprung for a CZ452 Varmint, but not sure I want to spend that kind of money. I like wood and blue, detachable magazine, but am not set on bull barrel. Sporter with iron sights is ok too.

I've had a Marlin in mind for sentimental reasons, but I'm not familiar with their model variations. I've seen a couple older 25m models for sale, as well as 925, and 782. Cabelas has the XT-22M.

So what are all of these different models? They look similar. Are they just newer versions of the same gun? I understand the XT-22 now has an adjustable trigger, and some of the older guns had terrible triggers.

Anything else I should know? Anyone here knowledgeable in all things Marlin?

I have an older 25mn with the "micro-groove" rifling that I got new for a xmas present in 1993. I was lucky and it had a decent trigger out of the box. This rifle is very accurate, although it prefers the Winchester 40 gr jhp, or fmj. Topped it with a Bushnell Trophy 3-9x40 and never looked back.

Well...like you I don't know much about Marlin either but I have had a 452 for more than 25 years and I wanted a .22mag so I did a lot of reading and started to find that (no surprise) the 452 .22mag was very well regarded... I also found out that the Marlin 783 was even more widely admired for its accuracy and handling.......I ended up buying both (took a while to find them though!) and I haven't been disappointed at all
