My 15-year old daughter's first high power is a Marlin 336 in 30.30 with a half-length magazine tube and a 20" barrel. She shoots it very well off the bench or with some kind of rest, but for freehand it is too muzzle heavy. She is very short, and the lop was reduced to 12".

I want to change it to a Trapper model with a 16" barrel. Obviously shortening the existing barrel is not legal. Any ideas where I could find a factory trapper barrel?

I've seen a "Youth" model Marlin 30-30 that is exactly what you are looking for.

Not sure if they still make them, but they are out there.

If I was a gunsmith I'd be lobbying my local MP to change the rules regarding barrel shortning......If a 16 inch barrel is legal.....then who cares how it got to that length!

Marlin "trapper"

Several years ago Marlin made a model called the Spikehorn....with a 16.5" bbl....in .30-30 Win.....I just sold one last week...if you advertise a bit you can probably find one..

The weight of the 2 or 4 inches of barrel that you want to remove will amount to very little actual weight. Why not try to adjust the balance by temperarily adding weight to the butt. Bore a hole in the butt stock under the butt plate ,if there isn't one already and add lead shot to restore the balance closer to the action. You have removed weight already at the butt to adjust for LOP, you need to return that weight for balance. Just a thought.

Thanks for the input Bearman. I have actually tried that by attaching some weight to the buttstock to see what the diference is for her. Ultimately, it didn't work.

For a 4'8" / 97 lb girl, a 20" rifle barrel on a 7 lb gun is like a 30" barrel on a 12 lb rifle for a 6' man. My thought is that those 3-4 ounces of weight removed from the muzzle will make a big difference when one considers the leverage factor. I know myself that my 444 Marlin with a 22" barrel is a lot more muzzle heavy than my 444P with the 18.5" barrel, even though the guns are only ounces apart.

I do have a Win 94 Trapper in 30.30, but I hate to cut the stock for her, and the Marlin has had an action job already. But if I can't find a barrel, I might end up doing that.

Marlin made a 16.5" in the 60's and called it the Marauder. They also made or make a youth with a 16.5" barrell. Gun parts corp used to have new 16.5" Marlin 336 barrell's, I am not sure if they still do.
