marlin 30as lever

i have a marlin 30as lever action in 30-30. I got it brand new around 18 years ago when i traded a used smith and wesson model 27 for it. I only fired about 7 rounds through it and just put it away in my gun room. It came with a scope which i put on my 8 year olds remington nylon .22 this year, he loves it. I would like to start using the marlin for hunting and would like to put either a decent scope or red dot on it. Which do most people prefer, dot or scope and which model? I will be using it for mostly short range shots, probably never more than 75 yards in mostly hardwood bush or small open growen over fields.

I put a Leupold IER scout scope on my Marlin and I am quite happy with the setup. I used the XS scout rail mount and quick release rings, so I can use the iron sights if I want or slap the scope on.
