Had this posted in the Gunsmithing section but didn't get any replies, so I'll ask here instead...

I have a 1950 Marlin 336 that my dad got ~25 years ago, the butt plate and screws were gone when he got it. We just kept a slip on recoil pad on it.. I have found a replacement butt plate that I am waiting to arrive, but now I need to know what screws I need. Does anyone know what size screws, length and thread, would have been used originally?

Once you have the butt plate you can go to a hardware store and find a phillips head wood screw about 3/4"-1" in length that has a head size and shape that fits nicely into the countersunk hole in the butt plate and you should be good to go.

The reason I'm asking is because I want to use the same screw holes, if possible I don't believe they are damaged, and need to know what the thread of the originals would be so they turn in properly..

Bring the stock and plate to the hardware store and you should get a good idea if they fit correctly, wood threads are typically pretty course and the only real change is the diameter size based on the size of the screw that you are using. If the screws are loose for some reason you can use a sliver of wood and wood glue to make it tighter but it sounds like you won't need to do that.

If I had to guess #8 is what your looking for 3/4"-1" in length.... start there and see how it looks.

The only other decision is flat head or oval, pretty sure they used oval heads..... I don't have one in front of me to check.

Here's a picture of a #6 5/8" oval head wood screw, 5/8" might work as well if there is no 3/4" the oval refers to the dome shaped top where the philips cross cuts are.

Just to add to all the good suggestions, I would oil blacken the screws. You just heat the screws with a propane torch to cherry red and then dip them into a jar of oil. Any old motor oil or so will do. If the screws are plated, just sand the plating off prior to blackening.

This is all good advice. I once had to restore a cracked buttplate. I purchased a reproduction unit from Numrich Gun Parts in West Hurley, NY. It was a super fit and the screws looked like something from Fastenal / Brafasco fastener supply, except you have to deal with the rest of the 98 remaining screws afterwards. :nest:

Hey, Rifledude,

Thanks for that “Hungry” style welfare approach to blackening the screw/ heads. I learned something new today. Much gratitude for that method / means / viewpoint.

Enjoy the Marlin 336 / 1895 addiction!! I keep showing my 2 lever gun blasters around here on CGN!! It’s a hoot!
