My buddy and I are going to bring a Marlin 336 back to life.
It belongs to my Father in- law, who purchased it ,second hand ,back in the 60s.

It’s been used for many moose hunts.

The screws are mangled to ####, the butt stock is split and being held together by a brass band, overall she’s rough.
Need a new butt stock endcap as the current one is from a Baikel?
Barrel is good though.
It’s going to get a complete bluing, stock will get pinned, sanded and refinished.View attachment 551975View attachment 551976View attachment 551977

Bore is good.
An estimate of round count.
I’ve known the gun for 25 years and actually shot my first moose with it.
In that 25 years I’m guessing about 75 rounds down the pipe.
In the 45 years previous I’ll be generous and say 20 rounds per year.

So that puts it at approximately 975 rounds down the pipe.
No rust or pitting in the barrel.

That’s excellent. Surprisingly the bore outlasted the rest of the gun.

Yes the gun was used as a tool only, shoot a moose , put away in a sock.
I don’t think it’s ever been properly cleaned.
Only plus was , it was never put away wet… lol

Once we removed that black paint from the receiver, she was gouged up pretty good.
The stock was cracked as well.
Lots of pitting between the barrel and tube and the screws were tore up pretty bad.

Sanded out the pitting and goiged as much as possible .
Sanded the stock and epoxied two brass pins in place.
Fixed all the screws then heat treated and quenched in oil.
Reblued the barrel,tube and receiver.

Overall, it turned out good.

Looks good. I liked the before look as well but this will definitely make it easier to keep the rust at bay. Good utilitarian rifle.

Good work, tough to beat the 336 as an all round game getter. I got one for Xmas when I was 14 in 1960 ( had to chip in $50 as they were over my Xmas allowance of $25). It was my only big game rifle for15 years used to harvest deer and moose. Hope to pass it on to a grandson/granddaughter at some point.
