My local gun shop has a marlin 336 xlr listed on their website, I have been looking at these online and am pretty sure I am gonna pick one up. However I went in to look and it has a wood stock not laminate, It is stainless, and appears to look like a xlr but it was my understanding that these only came with laminate stocks. So how do I tell if it really is a xlr by S/N or whatever, I am gonna go back and handle it today or tomorrow depending on what I hear from people here. Is $595 a good price as well, it appears immaculate?

Sounds like someone swapped the stocks. All the XLR came with grey colored laminate stock. If it's brand new then someone might have ordered it with the wood stock but never went through with it. At $595 it sounds like a good price, I would guess this would be classes as used, as new there in the $700+ range.

The gun shop is telling me that you get the early xlr rifles with a wood stock, this however is a remlin, when did they start making the xlr series? The fit and finish seems really good for what I have heard of remlins, I think it is only a couple years old so maybe it was built after they got it back together or the previous owner touched it up really well.

Edit: Found marlin catalogs that say the xlr line is new for 2006 so that solves what year they came out, however no mention of wood stocks only laminate. However I cant find any info after 2008 which is when remington took over
