I just picked up a 1949 Marlin 336SC in 30-30. Except for a cracked rear stock it is in about 75% condition, with some bluing loss but beautiful action and trigger, the bore is bright and shiny with strong rifling and no pitting.

I don't know what the following is like with these old Marlins when compared to a pre '64 Winchester model 94 so I was wondering is someone had an idea of the value of a rifle like this? Thanks

Around $300 give or take..... Has it been drilled and tapped? If it hasn't been drilled and the crack is an easy repair maybe a bit more.
I like the old Marlin's and they aren't making them like that anymore so if it's a good shooter I'd hold onto it!
Post a picture.

It has not been modified in any way, but it is missing the front site hood. The rear stock has been repaired, but it won't win any awards for beauty.

I see a used but good condition rear stock in my future (I hope), and maybe a rear peep sight... it looks like there are holes in the side of the receiver that may be for that. (They don't do anything else, just have set screws in them) Pics to follow once I get it cleaned up a bit.

That's what the holes are for, a nice steel lyman peep would be perfect!

Yep, likely in the $300-400 range. Once in a while you see some of the older Marlins go for a bit more if they're in really nice condition.

Here are the pics...

In this first pic you can faintly see where the stock is cracked (maybe) just below the comb behind the wrist.

Whoever repaired it left glue all over the stock, thick and ugly, so, I removed all the glue, stripped the wood, then stained and oiled it.
It looks better and the repair seems solid enough.
I hate to replace it because it is serial matched to the gun, but I may do it and just hang on to the old one.

I replaced the beat up rear sight with a Marble #67, I can't wait to see how she shoots.
The function test, off hand at 20 yards was great, and a empty box of mini-wheats gave it's life to make sure the old Marlin still went bang after a complete detail strip and thorough cleaning.

The bluing wasn't as bad as I first thought, a good cleaning and a couple small touch ups and she looks ok for a well used and seldom appreciated gun.

The trigger is awesome and the action is as slick as goose s**t.

Looks nice! I would just leave the wood as is if it's solid and the hood up front isn't necessary and if you peep sight it you might have to go with a taller front sight as well which sometimes makes the hood harder to use.
Is it a brass bead up front?

Yes it is a brass bead, but now I am thinking about a fiber optic front sight... So I can use it in low light conditions. I know it may look a bit out of place, but it isn't a permanent mod, just a user friendly enhancement.
