Question: Is this marlin drilled for side mount of peep sight?
There are two holes at the left side of receiver, one (the red) and the one above it. What is the purpose of those two holes (they are not threaded from my observation.

Comparisons: 39A is well-balanced in my hands but IMHO the metal and wood finish of 39A are two grade (at least) below the BL-22 Grade II ( I sold it).

The scope mount rail, hammer spur, and receiver lock are provided by marlin. Too bad I had ordered the weaver mount for this lovely rifle (a little bit over priced).

BROWNING

These are two of my favorite .22 rifles. The Marlin is solid and heavy and is a rifle your proud to carry. The Browning is light and quick. It's a pleasure to carry through the mountains and accurate enough to shoot minute of grouse' head. Either way, both beautiful pieces.

If the Marlin has the scope mount rail and two holes on TOP of the receiver, then it will not mount from the side....it will mount on the top using the scope mount holes.................
If the gun is new, it has the top holes.

Hi, Thanks. it does have the top drilled hole. But as shown in one of the pictures, there are two holes on the left side. One is for determing if the round loaded or not from what I heard. But what is the other hole for?

The drilled holes that are tapped and plugged are for side mounted peep sights. The other holes that are not tapped are to determine, with a quick look, if you have any shells in or it's empty. I have also read that the hole that looks into whether or not you have one in the chamber or not is also for pressure release, but not to sure of that one as the 39A is one solid gun. When at the range and you find yourself either counting shots or looking inside the chamber to see if you have any more rounds you could try this little trick. Put a cb round as your very last shot and the diifferance in noise will tell you your done.

Model 39a is by far my favourite 22 I own or have shot. great little rifle mine was made in '58 and deadly accurate, and has a "real rifle" feel to it. The next time the $ goes above parity with the US $ I will be buying a new one.

Yeah these are great rifles. I own the Marlin myself. As to your question the red hole is a chamber loaded indicator. The top hole (actually two beside each other towards the top are for the ejector wing assembly. If you want to mount a scope, use the two screws on top of the receiver. As for a peep sight, I can't remember but I think Lyman might make a tang sight for this rifle. This mounts back behind the hammer. Nice looking rifle by the way.

Thanks.

I think I will shoot it with the factory iron sights for a few months, then switch to a peep, then to a scope.

The expectation is to shoot 2" with iron sight, 1" with williams, 0.5" with a scope at 50:D yards.
