Marlin 39A question.

I have recently acquired a Marlin 39A. From researching serial numbers I believe it to be manufactured in 1977. I have searched the internet and CGN and cannot find one quite like it. This one comes with an 18 inch barrel and a case that seems to be made to fit this barrel length perfectly when taken down. The 20 and 24 inch model would not fit in it. The case is clearly marked Marlin Model 39.

All of my research says that the 39A only came with a 20 or 24 inch barrel, so what is the deal with this one? It does not look modified. The barrel is marked Marlin Original Golden-39A.

Any information would be appreciated, thanks.
