Friend of mine has one of the old style original Marlin lever guns, not a recent Remlin production.
Brand new, unfired, in the box.

We were discussing the price, but since you don't see these rifles often available for sale, it's somewhat difficult.

What would old hands on this forum suggest for a price... to make both seller and buyer happy with this transaction?

Thanks,
Dan

I mentioned that I had one in a thread and had 3 offers to buy it. Sold it for $1100 in the end. Since yours is unfired and in the box you could get $1300.

Post an ad in the EE. The mods seem to be waving the flag about "What's it worth" threads and deals made outside the EE. Someone must have been burned.

May be touching a soft spot here however, I haven't seen JM models fetching any great premium. Yes, you can rely on a JM to be consistent in build quality and therefore confident in buying one without feeling like you're playing poker. My last remlin was ordered on line (good price so I gambled) and I lucked out big time. Build quality was excellent; every bit as nice as my JM.
With the new Marlins getting better and a reported promise from the CEO to inspect every rifle coming out of the factory, a lot of folks will wait for a new one to arrive on the shelf.
As suggested by BigUglyMan, list it at $1300 and see what happens. LGS has them listed at $894 for a new one.

cheers,

Thanks guys,

Let me clarify potential misunderstanding, this is not my rifle, it belongs to my friend.
He is an old school fellow, computers don't interest him in the least.
Hence, EE is not an option.

I am hoping to be a buyer, and since we are friends, due dilligence is not to offend either party.

Remlins are getting better, but I also don't feel like gambling.
I am not sure that they still make cowboy model with 26 in barrel?
Bear hunt is approaching fast, this rifle is right here, a bit more money but I know what I am getting.

Any further thoughts are welcome.

Cheers,
Dan

Go to Le Baron's website. They have them listed there. I have bought and sold off friends and maintained relationships. It's the seller who, with confidence, states how much they want for it. You can assist by offering some feedback on what you found however it is really up to them to set the price they are happy with. Listing it at $1300 is a hail Mary in my opinion. If I were buying it off a buddy, I'd offer a $1100. More than he paid for it and a fair offer. Close to what a new one costs (after taxes etc).

Good luck!

I believe they sold, when I bought mine, for about $650 new. If he's not interested in the internet, then EE prices don't mean ####. A thousand even for a guy who is limited to local sales only is pretty fair, IMO.

My thoughts were to offer $1000 and if necessary... go as far as $1100.

It appears that I am not too far off the mark.

Thanks everyone!
