hey guys, anyone ever mount a red dot to their 45-70? eyes are getting too bad for iron sights right now so im going to try a red dot, just wondering how they hold up to the 45-70 round. thanks.

I'm getting up there in years also and the eyes just aren't what they used to be but rather than a red dot I decided to go with Skinner Peep sights....They work wonders.

I tried one on mine. I wasn't really into it. Bright sunlight made it fade out. Low light I lost vision thru the lens. The dot was just to bright for low light. I ended up going to a 2.5x20 duplex scope with a long eye relief. For me it works perfect and I don't have to worry about batteries

I have a Bushnell Trophy red dot/green dot on my Marlin 45-70 guide gun and love it for the bush. I can draw a bead quickly and have taken many deer, both standing and on the fly. Battery life is excellent, but I always carry a spare. The scope is at least seven years old with no problems. I have a similar set up on my 50 cal. Thompson muzzleloader with no problems.

I have an Eotech on my GBL. Put the XS rail kit on and mounted the sight forward like a scout scope. Works like a champ and have shot many deer with it. The negative is it looks a little mismatched.

I did something similar on my GBL. The photo isn't great but I went with a XS lever rail system. The front sight was changed out to match the height required for the peep set up mounted on the rear of the rail. You can just see the peep behind the rear of the scope.

john that is the same gun i own. do you treat the stock with anything?

For a 45-70, I'd suggest a good quality dot - if you get a decent one it will last, have good battery life, and be visible in all light conditions. Remember that red dots are not like scopes, your focus has to be on the target, then the dot should simply appear as you shoulder. As soon as the dot is on the target, shoot. They're designed for fast shots with good accuracy, not 1/4 MOA groups.

No, that's basically the way I got it. Here's a better view before I changed the rail and sight arrangement.

Actually, it was a 'package' deal so to speak. I picked up a Magnum Research BFR with it, same calibre.

Previous to the GBL I had a GS but I was never too fond of the straight stock design. Found it a little hard on the fingers with the hotter loads the modern Marlin can handle, especially when using the heavier bullets. Can be a little hard on the fingers but my Son loves it.
