Hey Guys,

I know there is a lot of talk on this forum about the 10/22, but what about the Marlin model 60? Anyone wish to share the pros and cons about the 60? I am seriously considering getting one and would like to know what you all think about it?

I have one and like it a lot. Had few or no problems with it (can't remember more than a couple of FTE's) and I've shot just about every type of ammo through it. 2,500 + rounds. Rarely clean it, but it is due for a strip/cleaning now..the action is a bit grindy.

Mine really likes Remi Yellow Jacket, and doesn't like CCI Stingers at all.

Most ammo will one hole at 25 yards (that's a full tube of 14), and groups of five usually have 3 touching at 50 yards.

Loading is not as quick as with a detachable mag, but I'm pretty quick..drop in two at a time. You never have to worry about losing or forgetting your mag.

Not the best .22, but for $175 new....I REALLY like mine.

I love the 60's and their tube mags. I find them quicker to load on the go. Instead of fumbling trying to reload clips. Mine was also excellent in the accuracy Dept. It would take off tacks. My only beef was trying to strip it to clean. You won't belive how many things can fly accross the room when you strip it.

I also just recently picked up the 60, after reading a number of problems with the 597 and I couldn't find a new 10/22. The price was right and so far (less than 100) no cycling problems. I will be returning to the range to start on other loads beside the Federals I used.

Just get a Marlin 60, enjoy and pass it on to your grandkids one day.. Mine has never jammed or failed to fire and groups nicely with most ammunition, even cycles remington subsonic.

Or buy a 10/22, put on a custom barrel and make it almost as accurate as a factory Marlin. And yes, I have owned a new 10/22.. maybe it was a "friday afternoon" rifle, who knows- but my '60 is a real keeper.

Cons?
Heavy trigger from new, but lightens considerably after a couple of bricks. Loading can be tricky until you practice and master it.
Aluminum dovetail does not lend itself to easy scope installation. (But why would you scope a fast firing .22 semi anyway?)

Pros? light to carry and fast pointing! (murder on running rabbits!)
you get a 14 round mag.
decent open sights.
Time proven design, flawless function.

1Shot

Have one for fun very accurate. When shooting steel targets it knocks them down one right after the other .Kind of fun watching them falling over so quick

My experience is based on working on other folks' rifles brought into my shop. I've seen broken firing pins, and nylon buffer blocks. Apart from these two items, they don't seem to break. They are very reliable. These are fine rifles, frequently overlooked.

Mkonecny,
I just put another 100 or so rounds through the 60 today. Federal 38 grain. I zeroed the scope then started plinking. I had a few "flyers" but accuracy was quite acceptable at the 50 yard. No jams at all. Next week I'll run CCI's through.

Just bought a 60SSK myself... fantastic little rifle! Can't wait to fire it this weekend! Only problem is I can't figure out how to fix the rear sights (which I guess I posted in the wrong forum) (not meaning to hijack this thread so if you have any tips feel free to post on my other thread :D)

Overall.. good price, slick looking rifle, and I hear it's quite accurate. I love the tube loading as well, easier on the fingers :D

So far I'm happy, I'm thinkin' of picking another one up in the laminate stock and ss barrel.
I have one concern though,, be careful with that tube feed, the metal on the tube is "thin" and you can easily dent it. I couldn't figure out why I couldn't slide the feed down one time until I realized I had banged the tube. Worked it out but be careful.

A friend is looking to get back into hunting (small game to start) and is looking for a cheap reliable .22.
I think the 60 (I like the camo version :D ) is what I'll recomend, just because of some of the things I've experienced with my 597 (as stated in the "honest and objective" thread). He really isn't interested in moding up a rifle.
That, and I personally like the idea of 14 rds without a mag change.
Keep posting boys!! ;)

i have an older glenfield/marlin 60,
shy of the wierd issue i have at round #12 its great

every time i get to the 12th round the empty doesnt fully eject as it loads the next round so it gets stuck between the live round half in the chamber and the top of the action, so i have to take a key or small screw driver and reef the sucker out whioch is lots of fu nwhen it s also slapping around a live round LOL

Well, I think I'm going to recommend this one to the aforementioned friend.
I'm bringing this thread back to the top, in case someone feels an overwhelming urge to talk me out of it. (I HATE making recommendations!!)
I don't mind (too much) tinkering with my 597. He's not interested in spending too much, so we'll put the 10/22 out of the question (plus what we've read regarding out-of-box accuracy). And I don't want him buying something that eats only high end ammo.
"If there are any objections to this union, speak now or forever hold your peace!"
Thanks for any input.

turns out the issue was the extractors and springs where worn out replaced them and she functyions flawlessly for all 14 rounds:D
as for accuracy 1" at 50 for an entire tube
the model 60 will suit your friends needs and budget well and be a blast to shoot

It's the best selling semi auto .22Lr for a reason.
I believe it's also the second longest running production model .22 out. It was introduced in the early-mid 1960's and is still going. The longest production .22 is the Marlin 39A. Two Marlins top the list......hmm that will tell you something.
I've had several (Ruger, Rem, Win., Savage, etc, etc, etc) semi auto .22's over the last 25 yrds and my SS Model 60 is the only one I've kept. Sure it doesnt have all the trick's for it like a 10/22 but it doesnt need them. Mine will shoot some tight one hole groups at 25yrds and under 3/4" at 50yrds with no problems at all. The only ammo it doesnt cycle are CB shorts and longs. It's tough, fun, accurate and inexpensive. It get two thumbs up from me anyday. the only thing I wasn't real fond of was the trigger. I lived with it for years and then this year found a trigger mod for it that really fixed it up...:dancingbanana:
