Marlin 795 - Bolt won't hold open WITHOUT a magazine

As the title says :

My Marlin 795's bolt won't hold open UNLESS there is a magazine in it.

Without a magazine, the bolt open will not work. The only workaround I have found is that I can get the bolt to hold in the open position without a magazine I have to hold it back and with my other hand push up the bolt controlling lever (part 31 on this schematics : http://marlinspares.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/Semi-auto222.bmp ).

Has anyone ever had that problem? Would taking down the action, clean it and put it back up in place fix it? Or should I get it it fixed... ?

Thanks!

EDIT : Forgot to add that this problem started right after I cleaned the rifle. Leading me to believe I may have damaged the action by pushing the cleaning rod too far.

Hey, I just got my Marlin yesterday and I'm not a professional but, Isn't that the way it is supposed to be?

I got my marlin just recently too, but it used to be that when pulled the bolt would hold, wheter there was a magazine or not.

EDIT : Going back to the manual, it seems you are correct : http://i.imgur.com/mRPavKh.png

So I am either imaging that the bolt used to hold open when pulled back without a magazine or it used to do it and stopped now. I'm confused.

I 've never used this rifle, but check out YouTube .... someone will have mentioned how the bolt hold open works; there is sure to be a takedown video as well.

If found this in a review of the rifle :

"Pushing it up while pulling the bolt back locks it open; pushing it down will release the bolt. This is the only way to release a factory 795’s bolt; you can’t ‘slingshot’ it shut using the charging handle."

I guess my memory has been playing tricks on me.

The bolt hold open is activated by the magazine. This round "nub",

Pushes on this lever, which is connected to the manual hold open lever.

There is a video on YouTube on how to perform the "slingshot" mod if you so choose. Also, unless your hitting the bolt with the rod harder than what a 22 would do, I'd think your in no danger of hurting the action or bolt.

Thats the way its supposed to be. One of the few .22 semi rifles that even has a bolt hold open feature on the last round. You can hold the bolt open without the mag by pushing up on the bolt release lever just ahead of the trigger guard.

^ What they said. Your gun is behaving as it should.

If it bothers you, go buy or borrow a 10/22 and find out what a PITA it is compared to your lovely little Marlin. And it only costs about 2 or 2.5 times as much as your rifle! :)

Like ONE other person has figured out you push up on the bolt catch while you hold the bolt open. The bolt catch is that little lever thing in front of the trigger guard. You can also push the cocking handle into the receiver to lock it in. Not sure the purpose of that but its there.

If you have questions on how to load the gun let me know...

That's pretty much how it works for all firearms with a bolt hold open.
